World Trip 2002 - Germany
Petr drove Jacob and I across the border into Germany to explore a massive old factory. The German Rhur areas is well known to have a large number of abandoned factories and industrial plants. This one though was right by the border. The border itself was a bit of a let down as there was not much to mark it, just a few signs and an old border post. The factory complex however was brilliant! This factory reminded me a lot of the Armour plant in Saint Louis. Lots to see, lots to do, lots of greenery.
Looking down the west side of the complex we could see the combination chimney and water tower. Such combined towers are common in Germany.
The front of the factory, even this does not give you an idea of the true size of the place.
Jacob enters the first part of the building, probably an administration area as it had a lot of offices.
Hallway in the administration area. A typical shower block resides on the left..
The tiles needed a bit of cleaning to say the least. I often judge the age of a building by the condition tiles and bathrooms are in. Mind you, they seem to be a prime target for vandals.
I don't normally approve of graffiti, but this piece added to this room.
An old book case lies on it's side in a former loading bay. We exited this section of the building to enter the main complex.
My guide in Germany was Petr Kazil. He has a brilliant web site here. Jacob has an excelent web site also, with pictures from the same trip and an aerial photo.
