World Trip 2002 - Rotterdam

Rotterdam was another brilliant city. I could easily live there. It was great to finally meet Petr Kazil after hearing about him and his web site for so long. I have to admit I'm quite jealous of the Europeans. They are able to visit other countries so easily. I recall Andrew in London saying how easy it was to go visit the Netherlands and Germany. To me it was right around the other side of the world.

Most of the exploring I did in Rotterdam was tourist stuff. Looking at the old harbor, riding Petr's bicycle down town and going places anyone could easily go. I like that though, it was very enjoyable and relaxing. No worries about getting caught.

Petr took me out to the harbors at night. That was great. We drove past oil refineries and the lights from the refraction towers. We visited a grain loading dock where we were able to explore without any interference. We could have probably walked right out to the ships docked there without seeing anyone but we decided that would not be a good idea.

I was really surprised by Petr's audacity. I am a chicken compared to him. I was worried about getting caught in a foreign country, particularly in these times we live. When we went down to Charleroi Petr himself said he was not as audacious as Jacob and Ben. Those guys were really brave, as they explored places and did things I really thought twice about.

Burnt out boat on the shores of a lake in Rotterdam. I thought it was nice of the locals to make me welcome with this offering.

The classic Dutch windmills.

The tunnels of the Rotterdam underground. These tunnels had some really wide with platforms right down the entire length of the tunnels.

This is the maritime museum right in the center of Rotterdam. The strange thing with arms and yellow funnel is a grain loading barge.

An abandoned display area beneath one of the bridges over the Maas River in Rotterdam.

The old railway lifting bridge. An urban exploration target if ever there was one.
