World Trip 2002 - New York

This is the old abandoned Cedar Street Subway in Newark New Jersey. I found the location of this tunnel and Kresge's station while looking up information on the Cincinnati subway on the Web. Joseph Brennan's excellent New York subway guide has some information about the history of this tunnel. As this is a fully abandoned subway there was little risk to me entering it. I don't however recommend people just try this themselves.

Entrance to Grove Street subway in Newark New Jersey.

Abandoned subway, approaching the station.

I arrive at the station, which is on the right. There was no sign of the other station on the left.

The first windows of the station were boarded up, but further in there were ones open, though smashed.

Grove Street / Kresge Station looking back up the tunnel. There was supposed to be another station, McCrory's on the other side but I did not notice it even though I was looking.

There was plenty of abandoned furniture on the station platform.

Display windows presumably for the shop above the station.

There was a large amount of abandoned furniture in the station. Some of it blocked off part of the platform.

The furniture from a different angle.

An exit doorway from one of the display cabinets into the store. I think this one was blocked a little way in.

The main exit tunnel has been bricked over.

Bizarre ornament. Possibly for Christmas.

Tunnel continues past the station.

The line ends where it meets the former public service terminal. The wall is concreted over.

Small alcove near the end of the tunnel, presumably a refuge for track workers.

Old rusted fence at the end of the platform where more furniture is stored.

Exit to the tunnel

I noticed this as I was exiting rather than entering.

About 1 minute's walk from the abandoned station is a similar one still in use.

This is another station on the line in use, Newark on the City Subway line.
