Map of drain system with points of interest marked
Note: The map is not accurate and is drawn from estimates of where features are in relation to above ground.

UA City World MapEternity drain is a very new one, built not even two years ago. The water board took the unusual step of allowing a public walk through of this drain prior to its' opening. Despite this, or maybe because of it, the drain has been well visited by drain explorers ever since. I explored the drain in 2001.

The drain is quite large apart from the entrance. The main tunnel is large enough to drive trucks through, and indeed, during construction trucks were driven through. The floor of the tunnel is quite flat, with a few millimeters of water over it in most places. However, as can be seen from the pictures the entrance of the tunnel is tidal and quite deep.

Getting ready to go on a day's worth of draining. The explorers included 3 visiting Canadians, on the right.

1. The entrance

On our arrival at the drain we complement the waist deep water. Belfore is already wading across.

RC1 wades into the water to cross the canal.

Walking up the low part of the drain. Note the water line on the pants.

Walking further up the drain.

2. First Chamber

The first chamber. The pillars and ceiling here had been painted.

The drop down into the main tunnel. The water here was diverted through a couple of small RCPs to the extreme left of the picture.

Tagging up. Note the painted pillars

More painted pillars - this is looking back the way we came in. Note the tunnels splits here.

Tunnel Note the spraycrete walls and shallow floor

Walking ... walking.... walking

3. Gross Pollution Trap

The Gross Pollution Trap. This is a big hole in the floor of the drain. It is hard to notice if not for the stop sign. Note the change in floor colour, from shallow concrete to big hole.

The Puppet Master and RC1 shine their torches into the pit.

They end up walking right through the hole

Adding some more water to the drain

4. Main Chamber

Coming to the main chamber

The main chamber was about 15 metres long, but easily 40 metres deep. The guys are examining some concrete that seems to be hollow.

RC1 considers climbing the ladder.

It is a long way up

Hmm, bad evil dangerous ladder

Group photo

The tunnel continues on from the main chamber. Note how shallow the water on the floor of the drain is

5. Waterfall

We reach the waterfall. Note the water dropping from above

This is a very hard scene to capture. There was heaps of water in the air and the waterfall can not be seen very clearly.

Water pouring down the ladder

Standing at the waterfall

Tagging up by the waterfall.

Getting ready to go

The floor of the drain was very shallow.

Walking back

Back at the pillar room we contemplate an exit which is blocked.

We'll have to go back out the hard way

The Puppet Master prepares to take a snapshot. The water level has sunk a bit since when we came in.

Walking out of the drain

Exiting the drain

The Puppet Master crosses the open drain.

We wash off under a tap
