Map
of Bobs drain with points of interest marked
Note: The map is not accurate and is drawn from estimates
of where features are in relation to above ground.
Bob's Tomb is one of the more interesting and historical drains in UA City. The drain it's self is very dirty, one of the dirtiest in UA City. Yet it also has some of the most interesting features in UA City. Running from east under Kings Way this tunnel runs right under the Crown Casino complex before exiting into the UA City River right a bridge, almost below water level. This drain is unique however in that it actually runs below water level.
The new entrance to Bob's with the freeway off-ramp visible. Also visible is one of the Crown Casino towers, the drain's eventual destination.
1.
Entrance. Via the grille room entrance and travel down the small
RCPs till you get to a junction about
200 meters in (feels longer due to stoop). Before the new entrance was put on
it in late 1997 the only way to enter this drain was via a manhole at the corner
of a street in King's Way. The drain runs directly beneath King's way and Beachside
road all the way from Albert Park. There is a possibility that it overlaps and
even connects with Albert
Park drain.
It is now confirmed that these two drains do connect.
2.
First Junction. The first junction is a small
one, with two RCPs leading out, take the larger of the two (the one on the right
if I recall correctly) as both of these pipes join up after a short distance
in a narrow junction.
3.
Join with Bob's main tunnel. After a stoopy walk down a fetid smelling
drain for about 70 meters you come to Bob's main drain. The water here should
be about thigh deep and full of muck but it's better than the stoop in the RCPs.
Head right, down stream as fast as you can and the drain will rapidly get shallower.
There's plenty of muck on the floor, often including a few souvineer coins or
other stuff for you.
4.
Roof feature. A short way along this rather
smelly drain you will come across a sort of big gap in the roof with a series
of big doors above. This presumably is to allow access to the drain for servicing
purposes. In a few more minutes you will see a power cable running along the
walls and ceiling of the drain. This is a unique feature, I've never seen this
in a drain before.
5.
Alcove & Exit. Further along you will come
to a sort of alcove on the left of the tunnel with more power cables and access
points. Not far past this point you should come across a RCP
pipe on the right hand side of the tunnel (it's the last sizeable one) with
the word 'exit' painted on one side. About ten meters up this pipe is another
side pipe, and about 5-10 meters up that pipe is a large gutterbox
with a series of grilles above. step irons lead to one of the grilles which
can be lifted but it is a very heavy one and takes a lot of effort to lift.
This exits on to Whiteman street, right in front of Crown Casino! Be careful
when you do this, the gutterbox grille is right on the side the road. You would
not want a car to drive over the grille
just as you were lifting it. Alternatively you can exit it back at the entrance.
6.
Pump Room. Finally you will reach the most unique feature
of the drain, an active pump room! It's well worth braving the stinky and smelly
drain to see this. Directly ahead of you three huge doors can be seen. These
are actually below the water level of the UA City River. A ramp here leads up
to them. Either side of the drain contains strong grilles where the water drains
off. When you're in here and the pump starts up it's a bit of a shock at to
how loud it all is. You can climb up to the catwalk above here but don't activate
the switch above or you'll be sorry.
Do NOT enter drains. Read this warning!
