| | | Posted by IIVQ Underground trains have many different names. I understand in US they use the names "subway" and "underground" as well --- where are these used (is it different in, for examle, east and west coast) and are there other names in use? | Here in Chicago the part of the trainline that runs underground is the "subway", and the part that is above street level is called the "L", which is short for "e Leveted train line." Portions of our public trasportation trains run at street level--we just call those "the train." However, since one trainline can run underground, at street level, and above street level, these names are somewhat interchangeable. New York's underground trains are called "the subway" as well. I don't know about other places in the US. I believe some places use "metro", but that is more of a reference to the body governing the train line. I always thought US names for underground trains were somewhat unimaginative--I kinda like "the tube", for example, better than "subway".
