I learnt how to fly in a gilder and let me tell you its the best flying you can ever do. now because the gilders source of thrust (or propulsion) is gravity so the pitch angle of the gilder basically determines the speed your going, so with enough practice you can fly by sound. also every gilder sounds a little bit different do to the various dings and nicks in the wings and nose cones and the way the canopy fits into the mounting. another little fun thing is, just as you hit the point of stall it goes perfectly silent for just a second, if your not paying attention to what your doing and you all of sudden realize its perfectly quite its a nice little "oh shit" moment before the nose plunges (this happens a lot when your thermaling, which is another lesson for another day). anyways, i recomend gliders to anyone its the closest you can get to true flight and really really enjoyable to fly.
| Yes, yes, yes, all very true. The best days of my life have been spent soaring at the top of a thermal or in roaring mountain wave up in a glider. I have flown in some that are noisy, some that whistle, and the favorite has such a nice tight canopy that all you hear is a soft, gentle whoosh of air and that only if you're going fast. Even though I have been flying powered for a couple months now and am about a week or two away from my license, I am going to go straight back to gliders as soon as I can. I miss them, very much. Powered planes are noisy, shaky, and they only fly by angrily thrusting themselves through the air. Glider flight is real flight, it is smooth, graceful, and amazingly fun. You become one with the plane, and one with the air. You learn a LOT about fundamentals of flight an airmanship. I heartily concur with the recommendation! Anyone can learn to fly them and you definitely won't regret it.
