That and the outside handles would freeze and snap off when you tried to open the door! My 86 had a busted door handle the whole time I had it.

Oooooh yeah... they were that white metal crap. I remember Omni doors never opened, because the rod that connected the exterior handle to the latch would bend, and eventually you'd break the door handle off.

Just about every one... And since it was an omni, and people that generally drive them don't give two shits... They stay broken.

Unfortunate but true. Omni's went down in history as a throwaway car.

So I checked voltage. The pump gets 12 volts with the key on, and 0 volts while starting, and i assume running too if the car died. The pump was completely rewired by the previous owner to just be on when the key's on, bypassing computer and ASD, so this is probably gonna be a damn nightmare. There's an added black ground wire that follows the added fuel pump wire through the firewall, that's a little chewed up with copper exposed. I plan to replace that first to see if that helps.

Putting it back to stock isn't really an option at the moment. So, do I tear apart the dashboard and who knows what else to fix the homemade wiring job, or do I do my own homemade wiring job and just use a toggle switch?

Toggle it up for now. Dig deeper when it's warmer.

Something to remember is that on Chrysler and AMC in that era, they controled some circuits using a ground via relay to turn on and off. So I'm guessing if he wired up a second ground wire to control the fuel pump, I'm wondering if the ASD wiring is FUBAR.

The ASD wiring is absolutely fubar. Completely bypassed. It's been wired so if the key's on, pump's on. I don't know if it's wired through the ignition itself or just a key on fuse. Given the added fuse in the pump's wire, probably just the switch. I'll have to dig tomorrow.

That can be a easy fix if you can find the original service manuals for the car. Not a Haynes/Chilton, but the original Mopar manuals with the full page wiring diagrams.

Yes, but they just had recreations of the factory wiring diagrams and actually don't show wire colors, which makes things much easier.

The car came with 2 factory service manuals luckily. 1 for the electrical system with every diagram imaginable. The other is chassis and body. So I can put it back to stock. I was just hoping to save that for better weather.

Followed the little black wire through the firewall here.

That's totally not a clusterfuck, though despite appearance, the connections are all really solid.

Anyway nothing in this birdsnest of a fusebox has anything to do with the pump. It's for the boost gauge, A/F gauge, and Methanol pump. The Previous owner never found the ground wire while redoing the previouser owner's wiring fail, and am not going to rip apart the dashboard to search. Fuck that twice. I obtained a home light switch (totally strong enough for 12 volts I think. Previously used to toggle my old Cougar's A/C fan) and some 12 gauge wire. I'm gonna run a new ground wire with the switch mounted under the hood release. If that doesn't make it work, It'll get a new positive wire too. Either way, come 3-4pm tomorrow this car should be leaving the driveway under it's own power.

I don't know what caused the fuel pump problem but it's rewired and working now, but that's the least of my worries.

Was catastrophic engine failure common for these cars or something?

Ugh. I have a loan for $6000 against the title of this car (old spirit loan combined with this.) The value just quartered, and I blew all of my money and then some. Dead or alive, I'm stuck with it. It'll live on eventually.

Right now I'm just debating if I want to cannibalize the Spirit, or buy a new camshaft kit, although I won't have the money to do either for quite a while.

Seemingly appropriate.
Jeremy's 928 reminds me of the Daytona. Red, checker interior, and breaks down almost immediately.

I owed a ton of money on my Daytona Pacifica (huge, long story of heartbreak and problems and AGHHHHHHHHH!) after it grenaded, I installed a new motor, the tranny failed. And then I drove over it with my Cherokee, money owed or not. It had to die. I didn't owe 6 grand on it though...
