The year was 1983; the month was November.

Guess what started being sold?

Yup, thats right, the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyageur.

For 30 years, the minivans from Chrysler have gone thru 5 generations but it IS still the champion in the class of vehicles that Lee Iacocca created. Competitors like the Ford Aerostar, Ford Windstar, Ford Freestar (god, Ford failed big time!), the GMC Safari/Chevy Astro, Pontiac Montana/Chevy Uplander, Nissan Quest, Mazda MPV, and the VW Eurovan have all been dropped by product lineups in North America, but the Caravan is still made in Windsor, Ontario where it has been for 30 years.

To think, Henry Ford II could of had it...

True! But VW tried to sell it as an alternative and well, the Routan sold more than the Eurovan.

The routan is for people who couldn't face the shame of buying a chrysler. ;)

The Eurovan is just a kind of ugly version of the Vanagon (a true beauty)

Other than the word "van" they have nothing in common. Although I love them both, the Eurovan is built on a truck platform and will haul damn near anything, where, sadly, the Vanagon is a bit limited in the hauling deparment.

Having said that, the best pickup truck I've ever driven was an '85 VW Transporter (based on the Vanagon). It was all kinds of wonderful.

And the people who wanted a minivan with beefy towing bought the GMC Safari and cost less than the Eurovan.

Though, I heard more VW Eurovans were bought as Rialto RVs in North America.

I meant more in terms of their looks / perceived function. The big problem i have with the eurovan is it's not ridiculously utilitarian looking (which i love) and it's not the least bit sexy either. It's just kind of there. One of those vehicles thats just There. It does nothing for me - where as the Vanagon is just a 1000 shades of amazing.

the Lumina APV/Pontiac TranSport/Oldsmobile Silhouette were not minivans... they were very tall cars.

the Venture was a minivan... the 03 we had were i used to work took a phenomenal beating. I would piss pound that little 3.4L V6 like it owed me money and it lasted. What killed it was one of the RA's doing neutral drops with it... ouch.

I slept in my Caravan for a week on Phish tour in '98. Underpowered, but all in all not bad. My Windstar was an absolute POS though. The last straw was the rear axle breaking.
