I think its neat the paint job that is. However the reasoning and who its for is not neat at all. I don't like any of that family, but its something cool to see for sure. It'd be kinda funny seeing that thing come down the tracks, won't ever happen I'm sure

It is neat. And whether or not any of us like the Bush's, the fact that we love trains makes this one really unique. I love trains, any trains, regardless of how I feel about the "commemorative" paint jobs. And yeah, you may see it in service some time. It is assigned to regular freight service. I was lucky enough to see it about a month ago. Didn't know it was anywhere around, just driving down the highway and there it goes. I turned around and chased it about 8 miles before I could get ahead of it and get to a spot to take a shot. One of the pics is below.

Man, if I ever saw that coming down the tracks at me... who knows what I could be driven to do.

Everyone forgets that this isn't painted for the current president, George W Bush.

And anyways, what would you be driven to do?

I assume since that you are in this forum, that you are a railfan, and any good railfan respects railway companies and their equipment.

Railfans are a benefit to the railroads, and some railroads are beginning to notice that we are there to watch and help if we spot something odd. We don't need to cause the problems!

You've got to admit, it's pretty neat that UP has done this and their heritage locomotives.

While the heritage ACe's have the purpose of protecting copyrights (preserving heritage, UP? Hah! ) but it does add some colour to the huge yellow roster. I also dislike calling them heritage, they look nothing like the original schemes. But, it's better than nothing, and in the end, it gives us railfans seven new, rare locomotives to find, photograph, and watch!

Ah yes, I forget UP's motto: "We are still bitter about Passenger Trains!"

Speaking of UP's motto....

UP's motto: "We Will Deliver!"

And Canadian National's latest motto: "We Deliver!"

Is this a sign of the Canadian Borg being devoured by the American Borg?!

Its more like CN and CP buying up parts of several US railroads actually. CN even tried to merge with BNSF once.

I am a railfan in the sense that I like passenger trains, like to ride trains (I am currently boycotting the airlines for all domestic travel and even international travel when possible), played with model trains when I was a kid (and would still now, if I had the time to devote to such a consuming hobby) and so on. I dont get all warm and fuzzy over the equiptment like some rail fans do, although I do find it interesting to look at sometimes, especially the abandoned yards.

I was in no way implying that I would deface it or cause damage to it, though I might be tempted to vomit. desecrating a locomotive in that manner by putting a design on it "honoring" him (either of them, they were BOTH just as bad as the other) is absolutely disgusting as far as I am concered. Neat is not a word I'd use to describe this paticular one. Usually companies have enough sense not to mix politics with business in this manner, I am sort of surprised that they did this. especially given the fact that Bush is such an enemy of passenger rail.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the proposed BNSF/CN merger.

If CP was to merge with any other class 1 railway, it would most likely be a takeover by Union Pacific. I certainly hope CP doesn't merge, and it doesn't sound like the current CEO want's a merger to happen, either.

Here's an interesting link: http://www.trains....lt.aspx?c=ss&id=19

It's outdated, though. CN, for example, has acquired a few lines since.

Regarding their slogans, I think UP's most current one is "Building America".

Time and money, my friend! Very expensive but very fun.

Nothing wrong with vomiting over it! I do agree with your comments on the Bush family. I'm not much into politics, let alone American politics, and I do agree that it was an odd move by UP.

Just that fact that UP is doing special locomotives at all is neat to me. If I saw UP 4141, I'd still take a photo.

UP had a funny slogan awhile back, something like "We've been on-line since 1868!"

UP
"Uncle Pete"
"Utterly Pathetic"
"Universal Problem"
"Uncoordinated Peasants"

I could go on - all except the first one borrowed from BNSF train crews that have to operate over UP on trackage rights.

Very expensive is right! Shoot, the HO stuff is up there now. There used to be a mega catalog you could get from a company called RR Walters or something like that, out of WI if I recall. It was like two inches thick and they charged you like $35 for it, it had prolly every HO item ever made, as a kid, I used to sit and dream about the huge amount of stuff I'd buy out of there if I ever hit the lottery... and it would pretty much take a lottery hit at the prices back then and today... shoot...

OK, OK, OK! You got me. Its neat that they are doing special ones. And it is a pretty decent paint job. I just think there are alot more people worth dedicating one to.

Oh yeah, totally.

And Walthers still produces that reference book. I've got the 2006 copy sitting beside me right now. 1072 pages and only HO Scale. Full colour on every page, too.

It's not your average magazine advertisement! It's worth the money. I only paid $22.98 + tax CAD.

Wooo boy, this topic has gone off topic!

i met an old timer that worked the adirondack sub for the new york central and when they had to come to montreal they had to wait sometimes 3-4 hours for a late delaware and hudson train to clear the CP line and he said thats where the D&H got the name "delay and hesitate"
