Wow, 20-40% for a waiter/waitres seems very high.

I usually tip for a sit-down full service restaurant like this....

10% crappy servive but nothing done deliberately to me
15% Average / normal friendly service
20% for Above average service

One time 30% for a waitress that was really good with my kids, she went all-out to keep us happy, hopefully she noticed our appreciation.

One time no-tip for a waiter that was a complete ass, however we went to the manager and gave a tip to the kid that kept bringing us drink refills and fixing our order, he went above his duties to help us. We also told that manager that the waiter was an ass, that he didn't earn even a penny. The manager brought the other kid out for us to give the tip to directly.

As far as hotel housekeepers go,we were VERY lucky to get so much as a twoonie. The wealthier the guest, the less likely we would get a tip. And 'company policy' was that if there was twenty dollars or more,no matter where it was,it had to be turned in (straight into the pocket of our supervisor).

Jehovah's Witnesses were very good tippers, though they would get mighty offended if you didn't take the literature that was always underneath the money,we learned that quickly.

I'd say the most memorable tips I got were 40$ and a package of warm bologna, and a fifty dollar bill that some addict lost in the bed that he had been snorting with (which, with a gloved hand,I promptly changed into smaller bills at the front desk).

So as a hotel housekeeper, you rarely received tips? That dosen't sound very good for housekeepers.

I've been known to tip 50% or more for outstanding service. At restaurants where I'm a regular, I get EXCELLENT service because of how much I tip.

At a thai restaurant, my sister and I got into an "argument" over a bill that was around $22. We both put a twenty on the table and walked out. They like us there.

I rarely receive tips as a desk clerk, but it does happen. A recent guest gave me $20 for setting his wake up call, another $20 for going to the back to get him a drink, and then a $50 for watching his dog for a couple of hours.

No,it certainly wasn't,though it was a sneaky way for the company to keep our wages down, what with the 'plethora' of tips we were supposedly getting. I suppose it may be a different story with the fancy hotels, but ours was an express dealie, which brought in ALL manner of guests.

The Chippendale guys were fun, though we figured out when they checked out that they certainly weren't into the ladies. Astroglide, men's underwear and shitty sheets in every room they had.

*Oh,and no tips from them,either.

Back in Time... when I was doing the whole nightclub thing.... the situation would happen like this,

Went to a club for the first time that we would want to frequent regularly, had all my friends agree that the entire bar tap would be on my credit card. Meet a bartender, explain that all drinks for my friends to be charged to my card, give him/her the card and start the evening. At the end of the night, bartender gives me the bill, example $250.00, I write $250.00 for tip. Surprisingly every time I've done that, the bartender gives it back and says you made a mistake, the total is $250.00 and you wrote $250.00 for the tip. I respond with...

"Total $250.00 plus tip of $250.00 equals a total of $500.00, please charge my card"

Usually bartender asks am I too drunk to make that decision, and I politely inform him/her that they have not served ME any alcohol tonight, only pop or water, and that I would like VIP cards for myself and all my friends. Works everytime. We become regulars, no line-up, no cover charge, several free drinks throughout the night, tip well, and everyone is happy. Likely spent less over time by the huge upfront cost, but the service is spectacular. Once a bartender was quitting, he introduced us to a new girl, and told her we were to be treated like gold, she took-over for him, she did very well with tips from us as well.

Whenever I go out to dinner, I always worried I am not leaving a big enough tip. There is this Chinese place that I like to go to, and drag Shael along, all the time. Usually the dinner bill for two people is about $24-27.00

I usually tip $8-10 and worry that I'll offender out waiter/waitress. This place has excellent service, great food and we always have a good time there. I worry about the weirdest shit sometimes.

You've never been a server before, have you?

I have my standards. The average bill for my restaurant for 2 people is $25-$30.
  • No tip is better than 4 cents (4 cents is just an insult and I will chase you down and give it back to you).
  • One dollar is what cops leave (every time. Usually $3 dollars for 4 total piggies).
  • Two dollars is low and what old people usually leave.
  • Three is the average tight-wad tip.
  • Four is pretty average/satisfactory.

But I rarely get those. I MOSTLY get $5 per person. ... When I get truckers, I usually get around $10-$25 per person.

I find it interesting, Nvr2loud, that you tip so much at bars but so little for waiters. I do both, and let me tell you --- even though the bartender deals with loud drunk bastards all the time, their job is a LOT easier than your waiter's. And your bartender serves quite a few more people in a short period of time, so they also make a lot more money, more easily.

I tried being a waitress several years ago, worked an 8 hour shift and said "fuck this, this is way to god damned hard and people are assholes." Came back to it later because I'm kind of an asshole, myself, now. That's why I do well bartending --- my bar is quiet and when I get a comment from a "funny" loud drunk guy, all I have to do is look at him and he usually shuts up.

Next time you drive through Iowa, you're stopping at my restaurant. $8-$10 for that bill probably makes your waiter feel pretty good.

    1) Food delivery (pizza, subs, chicken, ect)
    $3 to $5

    2) Sit-down restaurant with full service
    15% for shitty service
    20% minimum for adequate service
up to 50% for awesome service, and a nice butt

    3) Buffet style restaurant
    10% for showing up
    20% for good service

    4) News paper delivery
I would pay people NOT to deliver newspapers to me. I get like 2 stupid local advertising papers in my yard a day.

    5) Hotel cleaning service
I tend to not leave anything, unless there is an envelope provided just for that purpose, OR I leave the room a mess. Since I do not like to leave forensic evidence, I do not usually make a mess.

Generally, I tip 20% before tax. Recently, I've experienced some remarkably bad service, so the percentage goes down to the 10-15% range, more likely near the 10% mark. And by bad service, I don't mean s/he didn't refill my water glass, or left my empty soup bowl in front of me for five minutes. I'm talking about making eye contact with me, and then ignoring me anyway, ignoring the pissed off 5 year old who has asked three times for crayons, ignoring my repeated request to put something edible...bread, crackers, what-have-you...on the table to give Kiddo something to chew on while we wait for food, I'm talking about the young couple who arrived five minutes after us and who already have their drinks and appies before we've even been attended to. I'm talking about servers who plop you and your kid in a corner and forget about you while they serve the people who are more likely to tip a higher percentage than me...flawed logic, I know...but I've worked in the industry, and I know how the system works.

Props to the servers who arrive promptly after I've been seated, offer crayons/colouring books etc. have water/juice ready, a basket of bread/crackers/buns ready to go and can take our order within five minutes of us arriving. THAT is worth 20% even before the food arrives.

A server is there to serve. It's a hard job, yes, but it is totally dependent on a good attitude. If you have a shitty attitude towards your job/customers, go and work for a collection agency.

    1) Food delivery (pizza, subs, chicken, ect)
20% and depends on time. I know that at certain times the store is busy so it isn't the drivers fault. I like drivers who go the extra mile when something wrong.

    2) Sit-down restaurant with full service
15% for bad service ( I do not want to punish the other people like busser for the server lack of service)
    25-30% for good service
A lot for really good service

    3) Buffet style restaurant
    10% for showing up
    20% for good service

    4) News paper delivery
    Do not get

    5) Hotel cleaning service
I tend to not leave anything as I do not trash the room.

    6) Cabs
I avoid cabs but probably 20% as I know gas is expensive and so is the fare

Restaurants like ShowMars I tip 2-3 on the table.

    Oh yeah, cabs.

I don't use them much, but $5 to $10 usually, depending on what is convenient (based on the amount and the types of bills I have), or how much of a hassle it was to find the place, from whatever bad description or incorrect address I had.

Also, there are dealers. Lots of people tip casino employees. I'm not sure that people tip drug dealers. And drug or gambling addicts care to offer up their advice?

$4.00 on a $30.00 bill is 13%, if that is satisfactory to you, then why is my standard 15% tip so low?

Oh sorry, I actually even contradicted myself once in that. I meant that $4 is usually for one person, and is average/satisfactory.
the $5 is normal for a $25 bill, and so on.

Wow that actually kinda sounded convincing.

Dealers I wouldn't tip that much.

I forgot strippers. Usually $10 on first one then half on the rest. But I've only been once haha...
