It's odd those that really deserve tips are denied by some company rule or some societal idea that some people don't need tips. A really good McDonald's worker deserves a tip, for example.

Jimmy Johns won't allow in-shop tips I know. We get people that say " Oh look I found 75 cents or a dollar in my pocket. I don't need it so imma put it on the counter" or somewhere on the lines of that. It is the only way we can keep the tips if they lay it out of there money and leave. If it is change returned it has to go back to the register.

Oh yeah, cabs.

I don't use them much, but $5 to $10 usually, depending on what is convenient (based on the amount and the types of bills I have), or how much of a hassle it was to find the place, from whatever bad description or incorrect address I had.

Also, there are dealers. Lots of people tip casino employees. I'm not sure that people tip drug dealers. And drug or gambling addicts care to offer up their advice?

This is what I say: "Here's your tip...that car sitting across the street...? Yeah, it's Five Oh."

No kidding. They get paid crap and are generally treated like crap.

As a guard, I'm not allowed to accept tips or anything for extras that I am expected to do. Recently one of the residents was having someone doing work in his unit and demanded that I stay for about three or four hours after my shift to watch his unit. He also demanded that I do it for free. I refused and he was rather pissed off when he left. I've also had a number of residents demand I go to the store and fetch stuff (booze, cigarettes etc) and on two separate occasions, to loan them my car while I am having their car fixed. I've refused (not supposed to leave site while on duty and I'm not a mechanic or car rental agency) and they would either swear at me or threaten to complain about me to the management. I just point out the direction of the manager's office and offer them the manager's business card.

Last month, one of the cleaners was approached by another resident who asked her to come in after her shift to clean her unit. The cleaner told her this was an extra charge and told her what she charged for the extra cleaning. The resident's husband didn't want to pay that and told her this was in their maintenance fees. The cleaner told him to check with the management office and to look at his lease (residents are responsible for their own housekeeping) and that the fees are only for the cleaning of the common areas. The resident swore at her and left. After that, the resident swears at her whenever he sees her. He was reported to the property manager and was sent a warning which doesn't seem to have much effect.

Fortunately, not everyone is like that. Some of the residents are well mannered and are pretty cool like the property manager. I don't mind going the extra mile for them. If it hadn't been for them, I would have transferred out of there.

If I go somewhere, if the service is good, sometimes I'll leave up to half of what the bill is for a tip.

The places where they add it in kind of bug me. When I was in Tennessee, there were an awful lot of those and the service wasn't so hot in many of them.

As far as hotels...I leave 20 bucks the first day of the stay, 20 on the last, depending on how many people she's cleaning up after, it was just me the last time, so I thought that was decent. 20 bucks tip per week for making my bed and giving me fresh towels isn't bad, I was the only person staying in the room and most of my clothing and other things were put away. The one thing I don't expect is people to pick up after me, especially a hotel maid. All I expected was that the maid make the bed, change the sheets at least twice during the entire length of my stay, maybe leave me one clean water glass and give me a couple clean towels every other day.

I mean, I'm the type of person that'll clean and pick up my stuff before the maid comes in. I'll grab a washcloth and wipe the sink down in case I splashed water or toothpaste and make sure I didn't pee or something worse on the toilet seat, just little stuff. Because I'm one of those weird people that really doesn't want the maid bitching about the mess I left.

I don't expect much out of maid service, as long as my bed's made and I have enough towels, I'm fine.

I just don't understand how people can leave awful messes in hotel rooms. I feel guilty for just asking for an extra little bottle of shampoo, an extra water glass or an extra towel because I want to go swimming when I get back from wherever I'm going for the day.
