maybe because of where I live, but i was hired through an internet application. It was for Bond Auto Parts in Burlington VT. I did the electronic resume blah-blah and 24 hours later, the manager for the Burlington store called me and wanted to meet with me as soon as possible. We interviewed for over two hours, he then called the district manager in who interviewed me for another forty-five minutes and at the end of it, I was hired at at $3 an hour more than was listed in the want ad.

I suppose it depends on where you live.

Oh yah, it is possible. I don't mean to discourage pursuing the online approach. I guess what I forgot to mention is my previous comment all depends on the actual employer. Some genuinely need people and are technologically adept and use online applications just the same as in person. Others are evil bastards and accept applications just to accept them but do nothing with them.

You might see this vary a lot depending on things like if it's privately owned vs a corporation, small company vs, nice people vs assholes, etc.

Example. On any given day my company is probably hiring between 1-10 people across the US. Go and apply for one though and tell me if you get it However if you show up in person, you probably will get it.

It will be six years ago tomorrow that I got laid off. That really sucked as I came in to work ready for my shift, wondered why my co-workers didn't want to speak with me and then was sent to HR and was given the news. I had ten minutes to pick up my stuff and get lost. That was after 13 1/2 years of loyal service.

EI wouldn't even give me the time of day and I went back to work for my old boss from my last year of college. I will admit, I was really screwed up and I believe I've finally got my head straight. I am taking courses and will be starting a new career next year. Strange but Shutterbug was telling me this was a blessing in disguise that I got laid off.

Laid off or not, losing your job unexpectedly sucks big time. It's a real blow to your self esteem and there were a lot of times I felt like a total loser.

Hang in there. Get another job (even if it's a temporary shitty job) and if necessary, get retraining. Sitting around can really play havoc with your mind.

Good luck and I hope you get another job very soon.

I have bit of a different spin on being unemployed that pisses me off.

This doucehbag I know hasn't had a real job her entire life. She was lucky enough to marry a guy who made enough money that allowed her to stay home and raise her children.

Poor thing, she got "bored" doing that and moved out, and decided that hanging out at the bars and being a drug addict was much more fun and exciting.

She tried a few jobs that one would get while they were still in highschool, donut shops, gas stations, etc but she decided that "working wasn't for her".

So this bitch sits home all day, living off the monumental amount of alimony and child support that she gets from her soon-to-be ex-husband. She also has a brand new car, which he has to pay for and insure. She spends her days running out to the drug dealers that pull up in front of her house or hangs out at the bar down the street.

All this while I'm working my ass off every day to make ends meet and theres people like the ones posting on this thread who are actually hurting and desperately looking for work.

So I call unemployment again today. I give all of my information again,(third time) and am told to wait for a determination from unemployment if i will get it. They said it could take 5 to 6 weeks until they decide. Nice. I am in week 3 now, and basically cant even buy food at this point. Yes I am looking , yes I am doing all I can to find a job. Yes I am depressed and bitter.

I have not had any luck finding a job,and have no car insurance anymore. My internet will most likely be shut off this week. Yeah I am still really bitter. I havent been out of the house for 2 days and I think I am losing my mind!!!

How many people here in the unemployed boat have college degrees? I'm curious if our economy has become so bad that that no longer matters, but as someone who's never had a problem finding a job, I'm a little confused.

If degree is not obtained, I may recommend taking out some student loans and working it. It pays for itself in terms of opportunity, more often than not.

The best of luck to everyone here trying to find gainful employment. The lack of health insurance that comes with it is the worst. I feel for you guys.

I don't have a college degree but have two certifications.
One in Travel & Business & the other in Therapeutic Massage Therapy.
I had the option to go back to school & have it paid for but there is no way I can pull off going to school full-time & working.

So my next option is working full-time & taking part-time classes. I had an interview today & was hired on the spot. I know I should be grateful but I'm not sure if it is a job I am crazy about. I also don't want to get stuck in a job that I loathe. The start date isn't for two weeks so I have some time to weigh my options.

I have a college degree in data processing and a certificate in Info systems management. All this and I'm working as a guard. I've enrolled in a course starting in January to get certified as a fire panel technician. At least they can't outsource that job.

I have 2 degrees and I sometimes wonder why I even bothered to get them. I have had people call me for interviews and offer me positions that by the time I commute I would be working for free. What are these people thinking? They see from the resume where I live and my qualifications and then offer minimum wage for 32 hours a week. Folks on public assistance seem to be living much better than I am.

That's the truth. If everyone just quit working, we could all get assistance. Somebody else will pay for it. No shit I think that must be the way the government thinks. I've been a Master Tech for 11 years of the 15 I've been turning wrench. There is not much need for a good technician right now. And the reason they let you go like that is because they are in a pinch for money right now too. If you collect UI off them, their rate goes up. At least in Wisconsin it does. My rate could be as low as.05%, it is currently 8.9%, with a max of 9.2% So I'm close. You pay that amount on every employee on the first $10K they make every year. If you have a high turnover rate, you are always paying. I've had 6 guys that have collected while laid off at their next job and it comes out of my UI account. It can for like up to a year and a half or so. I'm paying out the ass and have no business to speak of, at least not like it used to be. SO I get to pay the interest too for not having enough to pay. Fuck it, I'm out. Looking for a job so I can do it to somebody else. Also since I own the corp. I am only elligible for 4 weeks of UI at about $250 a week. At least I'm going to get some of my money back heheheheh. Now if I can manage to get my dream job getting drunk and fixing forklifts at the brewery.....well I guess they don't let you drink on the job anymore, just after, all you want. So keep calling and go up the food chain until you reach someone who can help. The monkeys that answer the phone at unemployment are not the ones to talk to when you have an issue.
