I could do all the research on google that there is to do and I still wouldn't really know wtf I was looking at.

I need to pick a vehicle - something great for highway driving (I'm moving to Ontario and plan on driving all over the states with whatever I get)
I'm not opposed to a used vehicle, I'm looking for something great on gas if possible, etc. something with room for all my camping supplies and maybe even a few friends is a bonus!

thanks for helping and hopefully not laughing at my pitiful knowledge of vehicles

A Volkswagen Jetta Wagon TDI

I'm currently driving a 2003, and fit four adults + two tents + food + exploring gear etc etc etc in it for the May Long Weekend trip up to Northern Ontario.

We drove over 1700km and it cost under $80.

Edited to add: Not sure what gas is there, but here it was in the 90ish cent per litre range. Approx $45-50 a tank.

VW MK4 chassis TDI (1999.5 and up).

Stpuid easy to get 1000+ km out of one tank. Scary reliable too. Bandi's has like 600 000km and still rocking and it's not all that uncommon to see them around 400 000km and still running as daily drivers.

Thing is, everyone will go ahead and recommend something they like and are into, so really, it will be hard to get a straight answer on here. But if mileage is really what you're after, diesel FTW.

My wife has a Honda CR-V (2007 to be exact).

It has a ton of room, comfy to ride in for hours on end, and does really good on gas for being a SUV. I think it gets around 26 or 27 highway.

You aren't going to win any races, or pick up chicks with it (yes I know your a girl yourself ;P), but all in all its a nice car, and I think really fits what your looking for.

EDIT: I think any small SUV or family sedan would be what you are looking for, just pay attention to the gas mileage. Some of those family sedans have big, thirsty V-8 engines.

Actually...no...even though I owned that thing, I would of not recommended it. I only owned it because my father was basically giving it to me free back in 2007.

my budget is pretty flexible. How bout I just say less is better?

Can you guys give me an idea of what I SHOULD be paying for one of these vehicles when I choose so I know I'm not going to get blindly robbed?

ps- I drove a scion XB while I was in the states and almost died it was so fun. Don't laugh at me, I liked the vehicle, lol. '06.

Scion is great... Toyota mechanicals.

If you want one, just buy it in the states, they don't sell them in Canada!

But seriously, get a diesel VW. My '99 has 597,000 km on it.

Actually...Scion is launching in Canada this year: www.scionnation.ca

But seriously though, I do agree with Bandi on the Diesel VW.

Provided you're over the age of 70. And the rest of the car surrounding it will basically suck. But a damn good engine.

VW DIESEL.

I am unsure of why it took so long for them to come here... they would have sold like mad. And the early TC was hot and was basically a Tercel.

My understanding was that the demographics for Scion at the time did not exist. The only reason it changed was that Toyota noticed Canadians were going to the US and buying then. They are not my cup of tea, but I can see why people like them.

Honda Civic wagon

40+ mpg and you can fit all of your stuff.

If you liked the Xb, this is like the same thing for 1/15th of the price.

I love how there's a picture of a convertible instead of a civic wagon in that link

EDIT: also, what about a Pilot if you're leaning civic side? somebody had mentioned to me a while back that was something worth looking into.
