My wife has a Honda CR-V (2007 to be exact).

My folks have an '06 with a 5-speed (which is hard to find) one and I've spent some time driving it. I'm a fan, it's a pretty fun car. The gear ratios are super high so it actually accelerates pretty hard, but it runs super high at any speed over 70 so I don't know if I would suggest it as a highway cruiser. It was a lot of fun smoking ricers at stoplights though, especially since the 4wd gives you nice solid launches. I bet the automatic is geared differently though, which might mean it does better on the highway

you mean it's gear low.
high gearing (numerically low) is for highway speeds and economy. Lower gearing (numerically high) is for pulling hard.

2.73:1 gearing is higher than 4.11:1

I love how there's a picture of a convertible instead of a civic wagon in that link

EDIT: also, what about a Pilot if you're leaning civic side? somebody had mentioned to me a while back that was something worth looking into.

I still see a civic wagon!

I wouldn't get a pilot. Theyre HUUUUGE and only get about 20mpg. I would get a Honda Fit, a Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix, an old Corolla or Camry wagon, a Ford Focus wagon. They have all the practical benefits of an SUV without the shitty gas mileage. All that I listed are reliable and get 30+mpg.

did you really just say pontiac? Isn't that like shooting myself in the foot and not having a doctor left to heal me, so I have to watch as I slowly bleed to death?

Exactly. The Pontiac Vibe is a Toyota Matrix, for less money. Just like the Chevy Prism was a Toyota Corolla. Dont be so quick to judge.

The Focus is not bad. Ive seen a couple of them, the hatch and the wagon, go to 250k with no problems. Theyre cheap too.

yeah go with a diesel VW, and if its out of your price range, take a look a 2.0 jetta wagon. mine got great mileage.

as much as I love the CRV, stay away from it, mileage is really bad for a honda.

I would also suggest a protege 5, its no VW but they're inexpensive and look good

Another vote for the Fit and the Vibe/Matrix. They're a little gutless (tiny little engines) but are surprisingly fun, pretty easy to maintain, and get great mileage while still carrying quite a bit of cargo.

Protege 5's have a lot of electrical and rust issues.

edit: and apparently I have typing issues

For what, a demolition derby? You couldn't even post a pic of one without rust holes!

That car was a piece of shit 16 years ago, and it hasn't gotten any better.

the whole point of going with a VW would be for the TDI.

The 2.0L 8V engine is absolute crap in the MK4 chassis, and I had one for 2 years ish. Yeah, it was reliable, kinda, but the mileage is complete garbage. A 1.8T gets better mileage than a 2.0L and is 1000x the fun. I'd be damn lucky to get over 500km of highway driving with one tank going 120 on the 401. It's also crap if you're hauling stuff/have passengers, no power and no torque, I can't even imagine the 2.0L in a wagon.

The ABA version in the MK3s is pretty decent being the MK3's dont weight as much as the MK4s, but I'm ashamed VW still use this engine in the golf/jetta city.
