I find those cars age REALLY quickly, and you see them filling Wal Mart parking lots complete with tasteless bumper stickers and pregnant 14 year olds spilling out of the back.

what do you mean by 'age REALLY quickly'?

as for stereotypes...
should i tell you what i see getting out of aged VW Golfs and Jettas here? Spikey-haired wannabe's in Hot Topic, American Eagle, Aeropostale and Pac Sun clothes, perpetually on their cellphones. Their hats are cockeyed, ala MTV, their pants are baggy enough to shelter a family of fourteen and their always trying to sound gangsta. They're always listening to whatever is popular at the moment and look down their nose and just about everything... basically the kind of people that need to be smashed with heavy mining equipment.

these kids/people are usually bitter because mom and dad wouldn't buy them a civic.

the Beetle invariably is driven by either women, teenage girls or old people with nothing to fear.

So ive read this whole thread and we still don't know what your budget is.

Are we talking a beater? $3k? $5k? $10k? a new car?

I think that will help narrow your options

I'm slightly conflicted - if I get an older car I have to pay up front, if I get something newer (which is what I was leaning towards with the scion) I can pay in chunks, yay! So,....new? .. ?

I'm not looking for something over 30 grand, that I know. Or I'd say fuck the highway driving I'll use my boyfriends car for that and buy myself my camaro.

as for my getting over 600 km in the 2.0.
believe what you want,i reset my trip everytime too. still do. seems alittle OCD at times
my 5 speed slammed jetta packed with gear drove from Oakville, to Ottawa, to Montreal on just over a tank of gas. that includes 3 days in Ottawa and 2 in montreal. some days we drove and some we didnt

too bad my AC didnt work.

at this point, this statement is very true. Now is a better time to buy a new car than a used. I was just reading an article in the press the other day about how prices on used cars, due to the economy, are less attractive than financing new.

Also, on fuel economy, my 05 Cobalt coupe (L61 2.2L Ecotec/5speed) turned in an honest 44mpg on a road trip from Moriah NY to McMinnville TN back in 2005.I made it from McMinnville TN to almost the Pennsylvania border on one take of fuel (about 400 or so miles).
My 07 Cobalt turns in, at best, 34mpg (but it's equipped with a supercharger and is geared like a dumptruck... 70mph=3100RPM's).

honestly, for the mileage, you cannot beat diesel and the only diesel worth buying out there (and I hate to say this) is the VW TDI. You can't beat the economy, nor the reliability. VW's with the diesel engine are FAR more reliable than the gasoline-powered variants. Unfortunately, you do pay a premium for it, but the investment will pay out over the long term in ownership costs and trade in.

Personally, i have always had good luck with General Motors products, but I seem to be in the minority here. So be it. They also don't make a car to fit your listed criteria. If you were to buy Japanese, buy Honda or nothing at all. They are a good car, do have some ownership fleas, but that does seem to be hit or miss. If you are going to buy European, the VW TDI. As I said, personally, i find the Korean cars to be slickly marketed garbage; cars that feel solid out of the gate but are crap within 20,000 miles.

the choice is yours. i hope you choose wisely and have an uneventful ownership.

Thanks I'm looking at buying my vehicle new once I move.

PS- If I break down and buy the scion nobody judge me >_> <_<

Thanks to all for your help! I think I'll stick around these here parts and learn something if you all don't mind my retarded presence. I've taken a liking to the board and it's members.

you have people here who work on cars every day and build performance cars for a living. There are also casual enthusiasts... don't feel intimated. If you don't ask, you will never learn and there is SO much to learn.

welcome.

dont wory about it if you buy a Scion. im a heavy modder and built many custom air ride trucks, (and cars. even my jetta had air ride and I bought a Kia Soul last year. you buy what you like. and dont let the past history of a company make you turn a blind eye to them.
You cant survive as a company making shitty cars anymore. a couple of years ago I would have laughed my self to death for looking at Kia or Hyundai, but now they are actually better cars and dont have the same crap they used to produce. I love my Soul

below is my shameless plug

(i fear Samurai is gonna rip me for this..............runs and hides in corner)

I'm going to suggest something here, something so out of character for me that you may want to have a neighbor come check on me.

I think you would do OK, with a Jeep.........................Patriot.

I know, I know, but judgin on what she is gonna do with it, and since it sounds like she would have it serviced correctly, I think size and economy would make it work out for her.

Now that I have taken the bullet for Haymaker, a XB or even the Kia box would be fine honestly.

I did take a test drive last week in a Kia Forte for fun, and was actually impressed. I feel dirty now. I need a shower.

If you get a Liberty, make sure its a KJ. At least that had AMC-era Jeep guts in it.

I'm actually tellin her to go Patriot rather than Liberty.

Just for the MPG's and the fact that I doubt she will do anything close to even softroading. Arrrrrrgh, what have I done.

i tried out a Kia Forte Koup the other day and it is cute. it's just not as gutsy as I was looking for. It does, however, suffer from a little thing i noticed every other Korean car has.

that's food for another thread.

Oh I know. But if you start talking about the Patriot, the conversation turns to the Liberty

The Patriot is not bad in my book.

It will if its a Patriot

If you plan on more than wet leaves in the fall get a Liberty.

If you plan on more than slightly muddy roads, get a Wrangler.

If you get a Wrangler, I apologize for putting the idea in your head

I had a Liberty for my rental car in Alberta in may... they've ruined it. It's nothing more than an AWD minivan without a sliding door.

More "fail rated" than trail rated.
