Interesting. When I was looking to refill my AC up the last time I was driving in Ontario, I stopped at the Canadian Tire in Whitby, ON and asked the first sales guy where I could find some R134A. He looked at me puzzled then said "Its illegal in all provinces except Quebec for normal people to buy R134A without a permit"

On top of that, Duracool is R12 which has been banned from use in AC systems in the US and Canada as of 1995.

It's not actual R12, it's just propane with some additives. They call it "12A", basically just R12 compatible shit.

Ah, so thats how they get around it.

I rather either retrofit for R-134A OR just find some R-409 which mixes with R12.

the 'retrofit' for r12 to 134 is basically gaskets.
that's all.

ok, here it is, on my way to pick of the 03 grand prix GT i saw an 02 on a lot. the 02 and 03 are identical in terms of equipment. But, big thing here, the 02 is more expensive than the 03, by 500 dollars. BUT its a one owner, the 03 is a 3 owner, the 02 has lower mileage (122 000kms vs 173 000kms).

so now im contemplating. The 03 was black and the 02 was silver. after my past experience with black cars (the sunfire was a bitch to keep clean) im really leaning towards the 02. Now the thing that has really made me lean towards the 02 now was when i test drove it Limelight by rush came on the radio. I know its odd, but i think its a sign. In the 02 sweet caroline by neil diamond was playing. Sweet Caroline was the song playing when my father died of a heart attack at the wheel of the 97. So yeah, my paranormal believer says go for the rush car! lol

why not spend a little bit more money and get the newer body style? they're half as ugly and seem more solid. Or better yet get an impala, id take that over a grand prix

well the grand prix runs great, amazing gas mileage compared to the old grand prix. one problem, it was a grocery getter so the exhaust is rotten. not looking forward to what thats gonna set me back tomorrow.

the 97 has a factory exhaust under her, if it had the GT dual exhaust i would have swapped it. This one needs a little love, i just changed the plugs... they were original, the dex cool was clean and so was the oil (not a used car lot change it did have normal dirt)

Just a little annoyed with PK3 keys...

Here if a car comes in for ac work and it has R12, you have to evacuate the system of any R12 whether the customer likes it or not. But yeah, the retrofit is some gaskets and different hose adaptors.

Ya know, I have never retrofitted anything I have owned, just dumped 134 right in and never had an issue once. And that's long term, like my xj, been running for 4 years or more with 134 in it and the ac is ice and its never leaked and the compressor is just fine. Go figure.

Well, starting with the 1993 model year on the XJ, they switched to R134a at the factory.

And I got tha 91. ( I did finally put on the adapters since my old screw on got damaged and they for some reason cost a fortune now). But I never changed one gasket.

Honestly, you are probably fine with anything after 1991; I've noticed more disasters with people filling R12 systems with R134a in cars of a more 70s-80s vintage.

And its not so much mixing the two themselves, but the oils used in R134a can ruin gaskets and o-rings.
