i am currently reading "World War Z- An Oral History Of The Zombie War" and it got me thinking... those of us that live in rural areas really have a leg up over our more urban counterparts.
some of the vehicles mentioned are not feasible however... as for diesel, you'd be amazed at how FEW places there are to refuel a diesel car/truck. Because of the climate, diesels never were really popular here.

I dunno Sam, many places carry off road diesel or kerosene at least if not regular diesel. And I would look for something with a bed tank too. A early 90's 3/4 ton ford with a 50 gallon bed tank plus the 2 factory tanks gives some good range.

Defender 110 with either a 200 or 300 Tdi. Simple, no electronics, basic drivetrain and running gear. You can drown yourself driving these through water if they've got a snorkel fitted. As bandi suggested it could run on zombie fat biofuel with modest investment in time should supplies of diesel or heating oil become scarce. long range fuel tanks added below is good idea with lots of options. You'd want to be prepared in the parts department though- filters, cambelt, waterpump, axles etc. they'd be hard to source in most places. Stick with the original steel wolf rims so they can be hammered out if dented. Spare on the hood and rear swing away carrier plus carry a plug kit and know how to use it. Win.

How about an old Chevy truck, I see them everywhere up here in the north country, and if they last the salt and shitty roads, I think they'll last anything. A 3/4 or one ton with a nice low compression big block for that crappy fuel and either a turbo 400 or rock crushed sm-465.
