Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.
As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.
But don't tell that to the good people of Waco, who were "visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence," according to the Waco Tribune.
Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.
But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."
The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.
At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled "We believe in God!" and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they'd always suspected.
This story originally appeared in the Waco Tribune, but the newspaper has mysteriously pulled its story from the online version, presumably to avoid further embarrassment.
“You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.”

The story has been pulled off the site.
Please if there's anyone who lives in the area can you find a copy of the print and scan it.

I think we all need to e-mail the editors and complain about the story being removed. If that ain't censorship, I don't know what is.

Call me old fashioned but I believe the moon is a powerful deity that requires nightly human sacrifice to ensure it brings back the sun from the netherworld.

Luna especially loves the blood of virgins, cast out onto a stone alter. Or, in a pinch, hookers in an alley.
Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door. "It's ok Officer, I watch a lot of cop shows on tv, so i am practically one of you guys." - sadly, that didn't work. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonno23/ All my photos suck.

Would have loved to have been there for a first hand report. That aside, not everyone that say’s, “We believe in God” is a Christian, and, usage of the term “Christian” has become so broad in its coverage that it no longer has definition. That aside as well, I won’t be standing up for those that left the room …if they were represented correctly as believing the moon generates light (though technically by definition, reflected light is still “light” and is “emitted”, just not the source).
I’ve yet to have heard or read of any evangelical, fundamental church preaching that the moon generates light. In the Bible, the moon is always referred to as the lesser light. In Ezekiel 32:7 et al., when the sun is covered the moon doesn’t give its light. And the cycles of the moon have been used for calendars, celebrations, planting cycles, etc., what… forever? Curious, what other beliefs there are for the shading of the moon besides the blocking of the sun’s light (I’m too lazy to google it)?
On the contrary, there’s a doctrine that uses an analogy that demands the fact that the moon reflecting the sons light.
…..In the Song of Songs, the bride is likened to the moon. …..In Deuteronomy 33:14 there’s the evangelistic, responsibility aspect. …..In Isaiah 13:10 the sun and moon are gender referenced indicative of the church (moon) being the “bride” of the messiah. …..In Revelation, the moon is glorified to the level of the sun, and its brilliance is seven fold.
Basically, it contends that the sun represents the Messiah, and the moon the church. The church doesn’t generate its own light, only reflects the light of the Son, the light of the world. When the Messiah is not present (night), it is the responsibility of the church to provide “light” to the world. If the church puts the “world” ahead of Yeshua, then it can’t reflect the light and is not effective in its purpose.

True, but is there any indication they weren't Christian? I'm fairly sure they were.
Saved from what? What the fuck does that mean? Saved? what are you buying? Afterlife insurance?
Well, yeah!

(Again, though, how do they define themselves as “Christians”?)
Probably the whole Jesus thing has something to do with it.

Awww, common’, you are always one of the ones I could rely on to not come back with a flippant sarcastic response for the sole sake of condescension (course, we all love sarcasm for community humor).
So, I’m going to say it’s a harmless jab, and you’re well aware that there are many groups that call themselves “Christian”, but maintain substantially different beliefs.
Groups like: Jim Jones’ David Koresh’s Jehovah’s Witnesses Mormons Christian Science Christ Consciousness
Not to mention all the sects that are mainstream in name, but have no resemblance in doctrine to the denomination they claim.
There are probably sub groups in every belief system/world view that disagree or even disclaim each other; dare I say even among evolutionists?
As I mentioned before, every church I’ve come in contact with, adheres to the analogy of the church reflecting the Son’s light.
