I'd say the best way is to create a system of trust based on unreasonable supernatural ideals, make it socially unacceptable to criticize religious organizations, make sure secrecy is maintained, and have a large well funded international organization cover everything up as long as possible - and then hump some kids.

As awful as the situation is, they could have scored some major points if they had tackled it head-on, rather than sweeping it under the rug and blaming hippies. The Boy Scouts have a rule where no adult leader is allowed to be alone with a scout under any circumstances. There always has to be at least two leaders present. If more organizations did that, the problem would diminish greatly. That's not saying the BSA is perfect, but that makes a big difference.

For what it's worth, Sam, we had a scout a few years ago whom some thought might be gay. He had kinda dropped out, and the boys were talking about it, and we took a vote. They unanimously decided that they would allow a gay scout to be in the troop, despite the BSA's rule against it.

Thanks! Not only that, three of our recent Eagle Scouts were atheists! One of them, though, was dumb enough to say so in his Eagle board of review, which almost got him rejected. He followed it up with some spiritual journey mumbo jumbo, which they bought.

The Girl Scouts, oddly enough, are totally cool with gays and atheists.

Funny that it's "cool" to insult catholics when its statistically more likely for a child to be molested at school than church. Not to mention the high levels of child abuse in other faiths such as judaism, but we can't talk about that .. holocaust, gods chosen, whatever. I won't even bother pointing out that most of the abuse all around comes from men molesting boys, gay much?

Before you wanna jump around name calling, I don't care if folks are gay or not. I don't like or hate anyone because they're gay, just sick of folks walking on egg shells not to offend certain people, when it's okay to offend certain other people, or why its "good" to be gay or why anyone should be proud that someone they know is gay for that matter. Are your gay friends proud of having a straight friend? lol Whoever said the church could have scored points by taking abuse head-on was dead right, i wouldn't defend how they've dealt with it - I only point out that it's actually a rare occurance overall.

If the BSA doesn't want to accept gay kids then they should form their own gay scouts, rather than try to take away the civil rights of the BSA by forcing them to accept something they don't want to.

When men molest boys, it is not gay. When men molest girls, it is not straight. If someone is interested in children, there is virtually zero correlation to what sex that person prefers in adults, or whether they identify as straight or gay. Just a point that you should know.

Do you have a source for that claim? It may indeed be true, but how many institutions that have experienced a child abuse situation have gone to such lengths to cover it up? THAT is the issue, not so much that it happened. Sadly, sexual predators permeate society, and these situations will happen. It is how our institutions react to it that is the measure of their worth. If the Catholic church had acknowledged it right away and taken steps to prevent it from happening in the future, the situation would be very different now.
