Noticed this up in the trees...
1.

2. Looks like a small hut..minus the walls

3. The base for some type of structure, maybe?

4. This cable wrapped around a downed tree may have been used to support a bridge. There were also a butt load of blank cartridges scattered all over this spot.

FYI, this area is absolutely awesome. Serene, very peaceful and a little sketchy due to the amount of animal bones all over the place, oh and the freakin Ticks.

I'd feel a bit more at ease exploring the area with a buddy, but most guys are pussies and are afraid of being eaten by one. Think I may have suckered somebody into going out there with me next time though. Not quite done with this place yet.

Once again Talisman, nice job. I've never walked this part of the base. Considering the sheer size and scope I think you will continue to find little bits of lost history like this. I'm not scared of ticks or kitties, its those pesky munitions I hate.

Honestly, I try and stay away from those areas that are marked as containing UXO's. Besides, the area around the dry creek bed was used mostly for what they called "man versus man reaction training", which involved no live rounds, evident by the massive amount of blank cartridges laying around out there. It's well worth the effort and risk if you are thinking about it.

1. Speaking of which..

Iphone..sorry.

I was hoping to find some AK cartridges there, but being out there alone my head was constantly on a swivel, and digging around in the grass with my head down seemed inappropriate at the time.

1. Maybe it's me, but there seems to be some similarities between the base of this structure and the picture above...?

Another target range "bunker", a little further down the hill from the one I found last week. This one had a few more comforts of home though, like a door..and a sink.

3.

Site was completely hidden behind the oak trees. You wouldn't know it was there unless you stood right on top of it. Loads of poison oak, barbed wire, flies...and a resident wood rat.

Cheers Eddy. I hope I can keep finding new stuff to post. Unfortunately I'm seeing more areas posted with 'No Trespassing' signs, areas that were not posted before. I'm not sure what's going on there lately but it concerns me.

Hearing more stories of people being threatened with citations and arrest lately. So now no one is allowed on the trails either side of the Gigling access corridor as far as Hennekens Ranch Rd. This is the area that the greedy developers want to build Monterey Downs.

Do you know if the towers in the west garrison near the frisbee golf course are still standing (the three story ones)?

Pretty sure they took those down a while back. I was over there in June and didn't see them.

Bummer, they had a great post-apocalyptic feel to them and the out-buildings had some nice little details.

All this info came from a posting on the NorCal forum of MTBR.com

Great backstory here: http://xasauantoda...ective-punishment/

From MORCA:

"Signage Increases on ESCA Property: ESCA Access Corridors Remain the Same

FORA, at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), is increasing signage throughout the ESCA properties. There will be NO CHANGE to the existing Access Corridors. The approved accessible areas remain the same as when the Access Corridors were put in place in 2008. The goal of the increased signage is to clearly mark Access Corridors and closed trails so there is no question as to the areas the public can use.

In the coming days, crews will be installing new kiosks with updated maps and new and increased signage along the access corridors throughout the ESCA property. These signs are designed to guide recreationalists onto approved Access Corridors, designate closed areas and trails, and identify areas where field crews are active in munitions remediation areas.

Access is restricted on munitions remediation sites for a number of reasons, but the most important is for your safety. As munitions remediation activities dictate, FORA may need to temporarily close Access Corridors for the protection of the public and workers. FORA will announce temporary access corridor closures via Facebook, the FORA ESCA Remediation Program website [www.fora-esca-rp.com], email, and the ESCA Bulletins. Such closures will be clearly marked in the field with signage.

For the safety of everyone, adherence to these restrictions is not a choice; it is mandatory. This is no small matter to FORA, the Army, EPA or DTSC. Trespassing puts one at risk and is an enforceable violation. On lands where past live fire training occurred, munitions can be found anytime, anywhere. All four public agencies are united in their efforts to cleanup up the former Fort Ord all the while maintaining public safety.

*Previous ESCA Bulletins can be viewed at: Daily Bulletins "

Also there was this note floating around:

"All-
Today at noon meeting Stan Cook explained the various signs and kiosks in more detail. His basic message was "the rules have not changed, but the signage has"-- the state/fed agencies have oversight over his signs, kiosks and where they are placed. Enforcement will also be ramped up.
He confirmed that ROE permits are still in effect and are good only on the designated trails in the permit and the days/times listed in the permit. All MORCA ride leaders/sweeps (and others) should carry the actual ROE permit (9 pp) and I.D. (suggest IMBA/MORCA card). Permit allows guests in addition to a leader and a sweep, who must be MORCA members. Recall, FORA's biggest reqt. from the get-go is insurance (which MORCA had to prove and name FORA as an insured, attached to permit as page 9)."

Well that certainly escalated quickly.

FastEddy are you telling me we'll need approved permits to ride the trails here now? It also sounds like there will be additional security as well...great. Thanks for the info and links.

<Reply # 119 on 8/18/2012 3:24 AM >

If there are still uxo's there why have the signs only recently been placed? The majority of the trails have been open and in use for years. There are no live munitions there. The greedy a**holes at FORA and the s**^head developers just don't want anyone enjoying this beautiful area before they completely decimate it and build an ugly arena/racetrack and hotels. Oh, I'm sorry, do I sound bitter?

1. Here's where they plan to build the arena.

2. They wanna put hotels in this area.
