I picked the non-metallic design because it won't retain cold. They're a little pricy though, $190 for these guys. Nothing special needed IMO if you're observant, though steel toes are good for the peace of mind factor. If you're aware of your surroundings and coordinated you probably don't need anything special, but of course having steel toes/shanks, reinforced ankle support, etc. can't possibly hurt. Waterproof up to the top and I'd imagine that they have the steel plate in the bottom. They are not steel toed.
