When I go exploring, I make sure I have at least 6 litre of fluid per day with me, that is: 2 1.5 litre cola bottles filled with water, 1 1.5 litre cola bottle filled with cola and 3 cans of cola. Usually, I also bring a little 0.5l bottle which is outside my backpack. On hot days I bring more water.

This might seem like a lot, but it also comes in handy to wash stuff with and I prefer lugging around 6 extra kg to a minor thirst any day.

Whenever I get thirsty, I get a headache and dangerously lowered concentration levels almost instantaniously.

I'm not an alcohol person, but I'd say that drinking 4 glasses of wine lowers my concentration about as much as being thirsty. So ... a lot of water for me. In coke bottles.

I had a platypuss (which is essentially a camelbag without carry-stuff) but it started to leak, and life-long warranty isn't valid if the store you buy it at goes bust. Also, I find it's not enough and also not a nice pack base in your backpack.

So true... I fell down last exploration with IIVQ, and was happy to see he brought enough water for me to clean up a bit... And rather bring 1kg to much then be thirsty to the extend that you even cut your trip short because you need to find something to drink.

Depends how long I'm gone, camelbaks are nice if on longer trips, but usually i just carry a 1L SIGG aluminum bottle, they can hold just about any liquid, even alcohol. but at a hefty $25.

I usually lap water from random puddles/toilets/sumps that I find in my travels. But when those possibilities are exhausted I reach for my sprint nextel monogrammed nalgene bottle. I believe its a .5 Litre but I've gotten it to stretch a full day of splorin in the heat.

Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Wal-mart sells a $9 decent bladder with a hose. Also, any plain soda bottle is one of the most indestructible items out there. File 2-3 of these and freeze 1 of them.

Thats a nice idea with the freezage Drool. I'm gonna do that on the next excursion. Especially as were thinking of exploring in VIrginia this summer. Im thinking maybe freezing half to 2/3 and filling rest with super cold water.

I've heard this about these. I lost the top to mine, so I can't use it.
I always have a nalgene, but if I was going on a really long exploration or one far from water sources, I'd bring more
Camelbaks are great because the shrink as you drink (a slogan, perhaps?), but I never bring mine.

I stick with Vietnam-era 1qt canteens. The pouch for them can clip on to either my pack or my belt easily and a vial of emergency water purification tablets on its small side pouch is a good add-on for being on the safe side for long trips.

Canteens are nice but are prone to snaggage. Camelbacks are nice too but bleh. Just remember to NOT put Kool-aid or anything sugary in metal containers, the Citric Acid reacts with the metal, corrodes the container, and makes the Kool Aid taste like boo boo. Go Monster!...

I use one of these...they're pricey, but worth it. In the colder months, I put hot cocoa in it, and in the hot months, it keeps water, juice or Gatorade nice and cold. It's double-walled stainless steel, so it doesn't sweat or feel hot when you put hot drinks in it. Comes with a little mesh filter so you can make hot tea in it.

Depends on the length of the trip and the weather, for a colder day I'll just slip a couple of .5 liter water bottles into my jacket pocket, if it's a hot day then I get out a 2.5 liter CamelBak and pack it full of ice, then pout water about 2/3 of the way up, pack in more ice (it always melts and settles when you add the water) and finally top it off with water. Can't say enough about having ice cold water to drink after you've been sweating for 6 hours or so.

I recently bought a Camelbak bladder and put it in my normal UE pack. They sell them separately now so it's not as expensive as having to buy the entire bag.

i HAD a very nice lululemon bottle like this:

which i used and washed every day (hot water and soap). was great for a few months, even bought a second one. then one day my water started to taste funny. so i started washing it with more soap. then i decided to point a flashlight in it and take a look. well. the bottle was full of mold. surprisingly i didn't get sick. i threw both of them out right away, and hit up MEC for a bpa free nalgene. life is great now. the end.

to help combat the mold problem try to wash it out with bleach water as well.. for my camelback I normally just put a drop or two of bleach into the water when I fill it, not enough to effect me but enough to prevent anything from growing all up in it..

I usually just carry a 1 liter plastic water bottle. I haven't had any problems with it as of yet, and I just clean it with hot water and soap, but I think it would still be a good idea for me to replace it every now and then just to be safe.

Thanks for the bleach idea, though, that's a good idea. I may have to try that.
