They charge too much for canteens anyway.

they gave me one, I lost it, and bought a surplus one instead of dealing with ASU/clothing stores.

Just use the bottles water already comes in, if you need to shed gear for running make sure it's disposable.

I use a camelback outlaw series backpack with a built in camelback, modded with a insulated drinking hose (dense neoprene) and a covered protected bite valve, and If you are willing to dish out the dough you can get an inline microfilter. (I dont need one b/c I use a MSR Miniworks ceramic and carbon filter) it filters directly into the pack b/c of the quick detatch bite valve kit. I use all of this for backpacking on the AT so I already had the gear. Trust me, if you find a camelback outlaw pack (they stopped making them I think) get it. It is worth twice the 80$ i paid for it. Nearly bulletproof ballistic nylon, waterproof media pouch for the camera which you can reach behind your head to unzip and put a camera in, and a convenient throw stuff in compartment on the outside. This pack is indestructible, I assure you. So many modifications you can make as well. I keep my Skeletool CX and Petzl zipka on it at all times. I had a guy pull me up with just the pack one time, it saved my life by working as a harness. I swear by any of camelback's products.

hit up MEC for a bpa free nalgene.

The whole BPA thing is really overplayed. For starters to release the BPA into the water you need to clean the bottles with chemical cleaners, put acidic substances into it or microwave it, none of which should be a problem with a WATER bottle. Also, BPA is unavoidable, the amount of BPA per mil that is leeched from plastic os only a fraction of what you will find in most food products (canned foods especially). I've been drinking out of old nalgenes for most my life and I'm fine, also my year old daughter has developed on or ahead of schedule so far so I doubt it's had much of an effect on her.

What I am getting at here is that if you have old water bottles save the money and just keep using em instead of freaking out over some BPA.

This is not "properly hydrated" Jut because you are feeling fine doesn't mean you are hydrated. In dry climates like Colorado you are supposed to shoot for a gallon of water (not liquids, water) a day if you are active. But anyway back to the subject of containers. I take one quart sized nalgene for anything i do thats under 3 hours and 2 for all day trips. Even if you don't plan on drinking much while you are out it is still good to have for cleaning/in case you get stuck somehow.

Also for all the people talking about using bottled water I would advise investing in a good plastic water bottle or two and then buying a water filter/buying your "bottled" water in the big multiple gallon jugs (refillable ones are even better). Not only are you saving money, but you are also cutting down on waste, are less likely to leave trash behind is a location, and you have water bottles that you can fill from the tap in you happen to be out of fancy water.

There is a vast range of condition between dead and healthy. The easiest way to tell if you are properly hydrated is if your urine is clear (not yellow). While you may not be dead you will fatigue easier, loose flexibility, loose awareness, get sore easier, and are more likely to pick up disease, and these are all problems U Explorers are affected by. The sad fact is however that most of us (myself included when I'm inactive) pee yellow. This, however, has nothing to do with the thread so I'm done with the subject.

Personally, I go for disposable 600ml bottled water. I keep forgetting to actually bring a water bottle with me, and buy it at a shop anyway ;)

A secondary reason is that I like to be able to just chuck it (in a bin, of course..) and not worry about cleaning off any crud that I inevitably got on it. Ultimately, a dollar or two for a bottle of water ain't going to break the bank each time I go exploring, but if I went out more often like some extremely adventurous folks, it would be an issue.

I keep a slab of those by the front door, and grab a couple on the way out
