All in all doesn't look like a bad kit, maybe a little heavy with 2 tripods??
And I don't see a back-up flashlight, hope its not pictured or you never lose a bulb or have switch/battery trouble.

I don't bring both tripods, just one or the other depending on what I need for the shot.

I don't have a back up flashlight, but I do have the glow sticks. I am just saving up money to buy a nice flashlight, then use the one pictured as my backup.

...and I might have picked up some road flares recently

Somehow it doesn't surprise me your encounter was in New Mexico. It gets pretty rugged there. I spent two months in an abandoned building near Jemez Springs and there was a lion that regularly came really close to camp. One night after the most blood curdling animal screams I went out the next morning and found the carcass of an elk that looked like it went through a paper shredder. Was glad the door opened outwards!

Are you really that worried about coyotes? I've chased them twice just for fun. One was biggish; for a coyote. Coyote attacks are exceedingly rare.

I've no problem with gun-ownership. None at all. But a lot of crimes are judged more seriously if committed with a fire-arm (this often even applies to toy guns.) It would be a shame to get in notably more trouble if a lesser tool of self-defense (taser, mace) might suffice.

Also, I don't know if the increased severity of judgment is applied if you HAVE a gun (unseen) or if you USE a gun (brandish/fire).

Does anybody know?

To the best I can remember, in NYS with a gun it immediately bumps it from a 3rd deg. misdemeanor criminal trespass to a 1st degree felony crim. tresp.

An emergency compression strap is a homo-erotic tool that's used when you just cant grip tight enough with your hand anymore to get the job done, its a special strap that's made of usually nylon webbing with a cinch buckle on it and sometimes a quick release.

You can get one at just about any sex shop (try google), and possibly an Army Surplus store in the "fetish" section.

Or, I think I've got a used one I can send you if you're interested. Your call.

hahaha, you can get them at walmart for a couple bucks.

or army surplus

Basically, like therrin said, it's a strip of nylon webbing that has a sinch buckle... think of the webbing on backpacks.

As far as the coyotes go... Coyote attacks are extremely rare, but in the mountains around the property I just bought, they have been getting more and more aggressive, and hunting in packs instead of scavenging like they normally do.

I get pissed at myself when I forget I have my 1911 in my bag. I've never had a situation I couldn't talk my way out of, run from, or avoid. I carry when I won't be doing anything illegal. Unfortunately my camera bag has a great slot for concealing a weapon like an M-1911. That's why Ive gone to using an old ALICE pack as a UE bag. it doesnt have that damned rainfly pocket I forget about all the time when heading out the door.

This is what I carry. I guess you could call me a purist. Just whatever fits in my pockets. The knife is maybe 8' long, to put it in perspective. It's perfectly legal as long as it's visible, so I keep it hanging from my belt in the back.

I bought the glowstick because I like going to raves, but when I started urbexing, I learned how stupidly useful it is. Click it once, it's a flashlight. Click it again, it's a flashlight AND a glowstick. Click it a third time, it's a glowstick. Click it one more time, and it flashes on and off, which would be a great distress signal or something. If you take the cap off, there's a whistle underneath, too. And it comes on a lanyard so I wear it around my neck. For five bucks at Target, it's a hell of a buy. You guys might want to look into it. They come in a bunch of colors.

I also carry my phone, but I used it to take this picture so it's not shown. Lol. It's great for emergencies and I take all my pictures with it.

In most states its only drug crimes that carry a larger sentence for weapons. (So dont carry a dime bag while your urbexing. and also, in most states barring a federal courthouse, open school, or other fed/state buildings, you can c&c without trouble. Even on peoples property unless there is a posted no c&c sign. (I feel this is very unlikely for a rural area.) But laws differ greatly from area to area. (Hell you can get shot for trespass in texas if they think you're gonna steal anything).

and a person can't search you're bag. Or hold you illegally. You could go so far as to draw you're firearm because you could claim you were protecting yourself.

Actually, for any federal property, it's illegal to carry no matter what. And MOST state govt buildings it is also Illegal. It's illegal to carry on any educational establishment unless you are in Idaho.

I've been exploring hard core for well over 3 years. I'm also a 15-yr veteran when it comes to wilderness survival. Never in those years have I had a need to carry. Frankly (my opinion) it's not wise to carry any type of gun, permit or not, while exploring.

If the property owner catches you, searches your bag (right to do so on their property) and finds your gun, not only can they press trespassing charges, but also additional charges for a concealed weapon regardless of a permit or not.

Just some friendly advice & professional wisdom.

FYI: I own several knives and an airsoft gun. I'm not against owning them or using them, but I never wear the gun or carry it while exploring. Not even when I go on a wilderness expedition. Absolutely no reason to carry while exploring.

... my two cents.

Are you telling me to read Rail Guy's post? If so I have, and don't find anything in it useful.

A private property owner has no right to search your belongings (like someone else already pointed out) and they cannot detain you. Also, having a concealed weapon on you (with a permit) does not automatically up the trespassing charge. That is on a State-by-State basis.

And anyone who compares carrying knives and Airsoft guns to owning an actual firearm with a conceal carry permit has no clout to pass any judgment on me carrying in my opinion. If ANYONE ever took an airsoft gun with them anywhere as a means of personal protection is just fucking stupid. It's a good way to get shot by someone with a real firearm.

I know my post sounds ugly, but I honestly don't mean it to be... im just kind of blunt about these things.

Here is my gear... Sorry for the shitty camera phone photo

I like to pack heavy, but I don't take anything I can't fit in my one bag.

Here is the lowdown:

~Camera Bag-Lowepro Primus minimus All weather (has a rain cover that comes out)
~Camera- Canon 450D XSI with extra battery pack and 18-200 lens
~Tripod- this one is big, I usually pack my smaller one but can't find it. LOL
~Three Flashlights, one for any situation, and enough for fellow explorers (I like the angled one best.
~Big Old-TImer knife-always handy as a tool and for defense
~25ft of Rope (400 lbs rated)
~Carabiner (375 lbs rated (weaker link, but i only weigh 190)
~External Camera Flash
~Flash Bracket with ext. cord
~Bag of Latex gloves
~Styptic(stops bleeding)/Hydro. Peroxide/Gause Pads
~Heavier rope Climbing gloves
~Set of easily discardable bump keys
~Grafite Lube for Locks

~(Not pictured):

-Snacks (including water)
-3M respirator and safety glasses
-Multitool/Electric Screwdriver
-Small roll of duct tape

It's a lot of shit, but my usual UE partner carries absolutely nothing, so we level out nicely as a team. Also like I said, all of this fits into my backpack which is pretty slim and easy to carry.
