Built in the 1920's as part of the Studebaker factories, it produced sheet metal for the Studebaker cars. After Studebaker closed, it was operated by Allied products until 1991. Allied Products purchased the property in 1964 and operated an automotive stamping operation, supplying all major automakers with parts for over 30 years. The Building was leased by E.W.I. until filing for bankruptcy in 1996. Tecumseh took over until closing the plant for good in 1999.

Once the city raises 6 million, it will be tore down. Although the Stamping Plant demolition is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2005, vandalism occurred late summer of 2003, culminating in a large fire set by teenage vandals on September 29, 2003. The plant was secured and remained quiet until the week of June 10, 2004 when evidence of forced entry, vandalism, and theft was found. As a result of the second breach of security, the City contacted the U. S. EPA for assistance to expedite cleaning and securing the site. These cleanup activities would have been conducted in the Spring along with the scheduled demolition. The conditions were not deemed a threat to the environment because the buildings were secured and ‘mothballed’. However, because the security of the site was breached, the City wanted to ensure that the conditions at the site did not pose a threat to public health and safety. The EPA Emergency Response Branch committed to address the site immediately because of the vandalism. They took control of the site on August 19, 2004. EPA’s work has included removal of all hazardous substances (barrels, drums, switchgear, transformers, press pit oil, underground storage tanks) except for asbestos. Additional rounds of work may be conducted by EPA if the need arises during demolition activities, etc. The Redevelopment Commission acquired the SBS plant from the Allied Products Bankruptcy in March 2002. Demolition of this property will take up to 2 years to complete. Studebaker Area A is the second phase of the Studebaker/Oliver Redevelopment Strategy that began in 2002 with the redevelopment of the Oliver Plow Works. The plan calls for a similar redevelopment and creation of an industrial park on the former Studebaker land. Projected costs for the Strategy: $13-33 million. Stamping Plant demolition: $6 million
