Do NOT enter drains. Read this warning!

This drain is close to Dungeon and Cobras

Blade's is one of three drains located along a southern creek. Blade's it's self is not very spectacular but the huge underpass you have to walk through to get there is. This drain is very good and really huge.

Blade's entrance and the first side tunnel can have bad gas!

Map of the Blade's and the Hanger with points of interest marked
Note: The map is not accurate and is drawn from estimates of where features are in relation to above ground.

1. Underpass Entrance. Before reaching Blade's its-self there is the huge Underpass, nicknamed the Hanger. This is a huge chamber, second only to the one in Big Bastard and just wider and longer than Anzac.

At the entrance a pile up of sand forms a beach near two strange side tunnels to the main tunnel. It is unknown why these tunnels were included as they serve no purpose other than to perhaps help support the road above.

Entrance to the Hanger

Entrance to the Underpass. Two short loops and a sandy beach on the right.

Once you enter the huge tunnel it is easy to see why some people call it the Hanger. It's huge, big enough to park a (smallish) plane in. With plenty of light making it's way down into the tunnel you can easily see along it's entire length. If it wasn't for the fact that it floods out during even light rains it would be a great place to hold a party in. Towards the far end a tunnel on the right wall extends southwards. This tunnel is known as Tommy's hole and actually is fairly long.

The Hanger, about 4-5 meters high, 10 wide and 240 meters long.

2. Open section of canal. Between the two underpasses is an open section of canal about 100 meters long or more. It's nothing special.

3. Entrance to Blades. The entrance is located in the left section of underpass under the road. This section of tunnel can stink a bit. The tunnel is a large rectangular concrete shape similar to Dungeon. Numerous manhole exits of the Gatic type are located along here. My map shows gradual curves in the drain here but in fact there are two quite distinct corners in the drain, the first to the left, the second to the right. I must fix up that map but I can't be bothered.

4. First side tunnel. This tunnel is located on the left hand side of the main tunnel. It is reached by crawling through a small side pipe. It is of red brick construction and shows some major cracks along it's sides. The air in here is particularly bad and foul so don't do more than anything more than peek into this section of the drain. The floor of this drain is almost always filled with worms so if you're going fishing (don't suppose many drain explorers do that but what the heck) fill up on bait here.

5. Double barrel. As mentioned above the map is a bit inaccurate, while curves are shown the curves in the tunnel are in fact quite distinct and sharp, the first to the left, the second to the right. After the second curve the tunnel splits into a double barrel RCP type tunnel here. Both of these tunnels are easily large enough to walk upright in. The left tunnel seems to be more interesting. The double barrel joins up after a very long while. There is a number of low slides and two side tunnels off to the left side of the tunnel before after a very long walk you come to a junction where the two tunnels meet. There are no exits to speak of here, a few rusted shut Gatics but that's it. There are two sizeable side tunnels, both on the left side of the drain but exploring either would require some stoop.

Just past the junction (which is not on the map) there is a section of really old tunnel with great looking rusticles on the ceiling. Back from the junction where the two tunnels meet the right side main tunnel looks like something out of the movie Aliens with all sorts of stuff hanging down from the ceiling. Just down from here is the only exit I've been able to find in this drain. A sort of hole in the roof leads to a metal lidded gutter-box which can be scaled with the aid of the side pipe in the tunnel. It's not easy but it can be done. This gutterbox exits to a street in Caulfield South and is the only metal lid gutterbox in the street.

6&7 Side tunnels. These small side tunnels are not worth exploring. The first one appears to run due north. The second one curves south and runs along under the cemetery.
