This drain is located fairly close to Blackburn drain reasonably close to Foch&Beaver. The first time Emor and I checked out this drain it was one of those fly-by trips, we only went up as far as the second junction because the weather looked bad. I later visited this drain with ID in much better weather. This drain is a prime example of why you should never explore drains. It is much safer, easier and more comfortable to just view drains on the Internet.

ID at the entrance of Gets Bigger.

This drain is a basic RCP through most of it's length, and in some parts it has a slight stoop, more if you are tall. One thing you will notice in this drain is the number of yabbies. They're all over the place. Wahh! Fortunately they aren't the predatory type.

1. Entrance

The drain entrance just is not all that spectacular. It is a standard 1.6 metre RCP. The pipe heads north and curves slightly to the left. There is not much to see until the first split is reached.

2. Split.

The first split can be heard well before it is reached. It is just a small room with a small side pipe that enters the room at about mid level. This pipe almost always has a lot of water pouring out of it, mostly cold water. It probably comes from a leak in the water distribution system unless the pipe is quite long. There is quite a lot of older graffiti in the room, including some from now defunct drain exploring groups. Nobody has heard of the 'Estate Eaters' except in this drain.

3. Second split

This drain has a number of small side tunnels, the first on the left, the second on the right. The second one looks like a bit of a roller coaster ride, heading up in a series of small slides. It isn't very big and it is pretty crappy for at least the first fifty meters. From there the left side tunnel gets low, and painful, and hurty hurty, oh my back, oh my head. See, there's no point going in drains, You'll only hurt yourself.

4. Backyard grille.

Continuing on in the main tunnel you will come to an enlarging of the tunnel. There is a nice grille there which gives a view out above the drain into some body's back yard. There is no pint looking for this above ground as it is in private property.

5. The big bit.

After having endured the pain of killing my back on the low section of the drain it was a relief to get into the bigger RCP section of the drain. From the vent shown above it is just a minute walk to the big bit of the drain. The gets bigger part of the drain is the last fifty or so meters. It's a very unusual shape to the drain. The section built under a major road has a concrete base, with a V shaped funnel down the middle. The walls and roof of the drain are red brick, but there is a much higher section in the middle of this length of tunnel. It starts off low (but still about 2.4 metres high) climbs to at least 3 metres high and then drops back to 2.4 again.

The tunnel is covered in the grime and dirt of ages of seeping water. Finally, at the end of the drain there is a big grille room. This grille room is always locked, another reason for not entering drains. Graffiti on the walls indicates that some people have tried to exit via the tiny .5 metre tunnel at the end of the drain. Others have stated that the tunnel is not worth doing. The tunnel runs for about 100 metres into a retarding basin, and is certainly a very stupid thing to ever go into.

Remember, drain exploring is both dangerous and illegal in UA City and other places. Do NOT enter drains. There is more than enough pictures of drains on this and other web sites to keep you entertained. Drain exploring should not be contemplated by the inexperienced. Even where legal, you should never enter a drain alone.
