Pontiac should've been an uplevel independent car line. Would it have been such a stretch to revamp your product line to have cars that don't look like a Chevrolet? Pontiac should've been a performance car division only. No minivans, no sedans... just cars made to get from point a to point b as rapidly as possible. Establish it as a limited production line, a halo brand akin to Cadillac.
| Completely agree with you here. I can understand keeping Buick since it is so large overseas...but axing Pontiac while keeping GMC has got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my life. Plus, I read shit like this, and its no wonder I believe GM's days are numbered. This could be a huge mistake for General Motors, if they keep this up. GM is pushing to free up funds for major updates on their line of trucks – and apparently they already have several sources of funding. The company wants to remodel several existing truck lines for introduction in both the 2012 or 2013 model year, and the remodeling project would cost them over $1 billion. They haven’t updated their truck lines since 2006 and actually put off the new redesign because…well, because they went bankrupt and had to get bailed out by the government.
The plan is simple: remodel their truck line, spend a billion dollars doing so, and hope to get back enough over a year or two to pay back the $6.7 billion that the government loaned them while still turning a profit. GM is betting that consumers are going to just pick up (no pun intended) the new GM pickups when they start rolling off the production line, but customers really don’t want more GM pickups, or so it seems. Automobile transport numbers for GM trucks have been down recently, but GM doesn’t care about numbers it seems. They’re relying on their full-size pickup line to sell well in America despite the $3.00+ prices of gas in certain areas and the government’s insistence that they produce smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles.
This isn’t looking good for GM, but who knows – they might pull it off. They just need a miracle or seven, is all.
