| | | Posted by Emperor Wang ^ You sound like a Russian bot. Ukraine is an autonomous democratic entity. Take up arms against that concept and you deserved to die.
| I would like you to know that I fully support the cause of Ukraine, and I am strongly against Russia's actions. I am just trying to present a different side of the discussion. The actions committed by Russia are in their own interest, similar to those taken in the past by other countries. For example, the president of the United States in 1846,James K. Polk , claimed that "Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil." Even though soldiers were sent to an area past what was the border between Mexico and the USA, propaganda was used to fuel hate towards Mexico. This was used as an excuse to invade Mexico and eventually taking 55% of the territory belonging to Mexico. I am saying this to show that the actions being taken by Russia, while wrong, are not unique. It is just that now, the actions taken can not be secret and are shown.

| | | Regarding the culpability of the average Russian you guys were talking about earlier, I’ve been back and forth on the issue, but there are some YouTube channels that I’ve found very enlightening, like this one: https://youtu.be/dXYnP5gVwD4 It’s a simple yet seemingly honest look into a random selection of Russians. I know this isn’t a always an accurate representation of Russian attitudes for several reasons. One being it’s a very small sample (but there are other channels that do these street interviews too). Another issue is that I get the sense that the opposition to the war is greatly concentrated in Moscow and the handful of large cities where these interviews are being conducted. Once you get out of the urban areas, the views are much more pro-Putin - That’s the sense I get from watching a few different channels anyway. All that said, I’ve been surprised at the percentage of these people in the interviews that not only oppose what Putin is doing, but many of them have no qualms with expressing their discontent outright with Putin and the war, despite the oppressive new laws about crossing Putin or his “special military operation” right now. There is more dissent than I would’ve thought by just watching our media’s views on Russian attitudes, but maybe I’m just a victim of wishful thinking. In any event, I’ve found the channel really interesting to understand what the average Russian thinks about lots of issues (but I’ve mostly watched the more recent ones about Ukraine). There are several others out there too.

| | | A lot of people the world over are force-fed such propaganda, to the point that it's sometimes near impossible to access any sort of real news, much less take positive action. Sure, most Russians probably support "their" country's bloody, unprovoked war of aggression against its much smaller, more vulnerable neighbour. A significant minority also opposes this grotesque war and Poutine's (you read it right) cynical political theatre. As Dee Ashley wrote, many are even very vocal about it, at great risk to their safety and even survival. It's irresponsible to call for the extermination of an entire people based on the misdeeds of "their" government. Do all Canadians deserve to die, on account of the unspeakable horrors (being) committed by "their" government onto Native peoples, a mari usque ad mare? I'd bet that most American users of this site viscerally opposed Bush Jr.'s savage, unjustified and illegal (if that even means anything anymore) invasion of Iraq back in 2003. Some will have marched for peace, denounced the war at every turn. A few even moved to Canada, just as thousands of conscientious objectors did back in the 60's and 70's, in opposition to the Vietnam War (perhaps helped along by a desire to live, for men of drafting age). And still the country marched to war. You get my point. “[...] the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq – I mean Ukraine." - George W. Bush, May 18, 2022 | You can't make this shit up.
