Anyone who wants to share photos, links, or info about the Turcot Yards (CN) in Montreal is more than welcome to do so here. Nothing is irrelevant in my book.

Anything on the Turcot Interchange would be greatly appreciated too!

It s all going into my blog, Walking Turcot Yards, at http://neath.wordpress.com

Thanks!

charlie, do you remeber, the turcot interchange is now on its 2nd generation of lamp posts. when it was built there was no lamp posts, the lights were built into the guardrails sorta like the the exit to PA4 at olympic stadium. they quickly after the snow they added lamposts (davit style) and in the late 80s the original guardrails were replaced with jersey barrier type ones with the coffee can lights. also few people remember the service road that used to run between the eastbound lanes and the yard, it started at the des trinitaire overpass and connected to the turcot yard access road

the curb of the service road is still visible near the fence, it disapeared when the widened the 20, it was a great shortcut for people not wanting to get a ticket on pullman

I got it now!

It's going to be interesting to see how they take care of it now.

The Turcot and Angrignon interchanges both need repairs. Lasalle has been pushing hard for a better access route and the newly developed Turcot will need better access routes than Pullman currently offers. There is the hospital project at the Glen Yards that is surely going to need help from Pullman/Turcot Interchange if it at all wants to avoid a traffic nightmare up there. There is also talk of a rapid rail link from downtown to Trudeau International that could possibly mean altering the main lines that go through Turcot.

Also Transport Quecbec has an idea of getting traffic between Turcot and Angrignon to be flowing in the "right" directions (currently they are all driving on the "left" side).

The Dorval circle is in for a long awaited re designing.

It is almost hard to believe that all that can be accomplished without there being any major down sides for someone!

oh yes,

And there isn't much in the way of Infrastructure at Turcot Yards so maybe they will be creating new drainage systems as well -- or perhaps re designing some things in relation to the Lachine Canal while they work especially at Angrignon.

And by the way, does anyone know if CN is planning to maintain it's facilities west of Turcot, the yards off Notre Dame that feature the famous Garfield, Garport, and Garterm buildings?

It seems to me there is not as much container activity there as there used to be.

Here is some stuff that may be of interest. This guy has followed the roads and rail tracks all along the 20 from Saint pierre into Cote Saint Paul. He has done an excellent job I would say!

garfield doesnt have rail access anymore from what i have seen, also the tramway tracks behind were finally pulled up about 8 years ago, the line to ville st pierre shown in the above picture will probably be maintained because its the only CN access to esdc/century, they store some equipment on the old dominion bridge property and it is the only access. the branch off here that was the last remaining track on the canadian car and foundry property has also been ripped up. the road in the foreground was built during construction on the ville st pierre interchange, its purpose was to allow busses to come directly from lachine to notre dame, it was built on the former tramway right of way, they followed this, then along victoria, down next to dominion bridge (tracks still in the road) along notre dame in lachine, then back along victoria to a terminus where dixie pool is now. that line catered to a lot of golfers wanting to go to the club that is now queen of angels academy. the plan for the rail link to dorval was already published, the turcot area is untouched, it would probably end up as a simple deviation from the CN line at the dorval station on an elevated line, speaking of the turcot interchange, its quebecs only 5 deck and it runs amazingly smooth

I have to agree that Turcot gets a bad rap from the people who use it.

The main problems are not there but at the junction of the 13 and the approach to the Champlain bridge to name a few.

Turcot actually does what it was designed to do. One of the big problems with roads in general in Montreal is that there was never much of a vision in regard to future use. But that has also served the city well in many ways as if subconciously keeping everything on a more human scale.

the only fault i have with the turcot interchange is on the westbound 520 to 15 south ramp, its the only one that doesnt have its own land dedicated at its destination, the problem with the champlain bridge is the merge at the atwater exit, the bridge is 3 lanes but its approaches only 2 lanes.

back to rail, what reason into the 1980s did freight trains go as far as windsor station for? 10 points if you can tell me, in the 50s there was 2 reasons

there was a track meandering around under the elevated ville marie, it served in its last days the yard that imperial tobacco had at the corner of rose de lima and st antoine. it became an employee parking lot in the 80s, the trains had to do quite the switchback to get to that spot, it is now the site of imperial tobaccos headquarters. the track also served the RCA plant with coal

I havent seen the notice but from what I understand the building(s) has been sold to someone who wants to reconvert to condos and that there is resistance from the community in Saint Henri.

the former head office building was sold to a developper in 1999 when the new head office was built, no luck trying to sway the city to re zone.

that looks a lot like century metals next to canada car not the turcot interchange, the turcot interchange never had metal guardrails, the VSP interchange did, the guardrails in this pic look just like them, there are still some of that style at the end of the mercier bridge
