i'm sorry, but the government is not my mother or father. if I want to wear the fucking thing, that should be my choice. In my 96 and 98 Cavaliers, I had the airbags disabled as well.

Second hand smoke doesn't really kill anyone. The statistics are BARELY there to back that claim. but you know what....this is for a thread of its own.

I'll address this there.

I'm sorry to tell you that if you are ejected from your car you can go through not only your windshield but the car that you just happened to be front ended by.

Happened to a guy from my course in Kingston. He was ejected and went into the van he hit. Just barely missed the little girl in the second row.

I saw this on my way home from work today. It happened in the 401 EB collector lanes, which were entirely closed off as police investigated. He'd still be alive probably if he was wearing his seatbelt...

seatbelt laws were not enacted to be for the greater good. if you think so, you're pretty naive.
seatbelt laws were enacted because lobbyists from insurance companies convinced/paid off politicians so they [the insurance assholes] wouldn't have to pay out so much over minor traffic accidents. The states [or provinces] realized that they could make a shitload of money off of seatbelt tickets...

voila!

a law.

So you're telling me that if the insurance companies would have not 'started' this law then wearing our seatbelts would not be necessary and all the statistics that would have been around from deaths due to persons not wearing their seatbelts would have not proved itself as a need to save lives?

what i'm saying is that i don't care that it saves lives... it should be my decision whether or not i wear it. That's my point.

Amen, Sam. We all make stupid choices. I don't want the government or anybody to be my mommy to hold my hand across the street. ESPECIALLY if it was a $200 ticket as the case is in California.

Seatbelt stops are a routine excuse for police to search your cars and nab you for other offenses, no matter how arbitrary they may be.

Like I said months ago, if you want to risk your life, go ahead....

If you are driving a car on the public roads that I use with my family, you should be forced to wear your seatbelt. You MUST remain in the drivers seat during a collision or no one is in control of the vehicle.

I agree with your earlier statement about disabling your airbags, I believe that is your choice to make, since it will harm no one else. But seatbelts, they should be mandatory just to keep you in your seat. I don't give two squirts of piss about your safety (seems harsh right?) since I believe you can choose your own level of comfort regarding safety devices, but I do care if your car is 'driving' without you since you moved over to the passenger seat.

Note: I also feel that if you have anyone under the age of 16 in the car, you must also wear your seatbelt so that you don't crush them. If they are 16 and older, and you choose to not wear your seatbelt, they can choose to get out and not drive with you.

Seatbelt fines are a joke, most violation fines are a joke. They are supposed to be a deterrent, but that rarely works.

Instead of punishing people for behaviour that 'may' cause harm, why don't we punish the offenders who actually caused harm with much more severe penalties. You speed, crash and kill someone, you get a few years in jail. If you speed, cause no accidents, why be punished? It could be the same for seatbelts, keep the law as seatbelt use mandatory, and only ticket for people involved in accidents who weren't wearing a seatbelt (If anyone was actually hurt because of no seatbelt)

You can't be lost if you don't care where you are!

Some people may not understand the convenience of this if you don't wear clothes that easily wrinkle, drink coffee that easily spills, or frequently get in and out of your cars on residential streets. These things make putting a seatbelt on and off annoying and dangerous if you try to put it on while driving. Also if you frequently have to take things out of your pocket...

I guess it's a city thing. Living in a big city and driving between point a and b dozens of times daily may makes a difference... don't know, that's just my bone to pick with it

I agree. I don't like the idea of it being required by law, but I got into the habit of wearing my seatbelt when I was about 18 and it's an automatic thing. And I used to deliver pizza and then I was a service tech making a lot of stops downtown and it never bothered me because I didn't have to think about it. The only time it's ever an inconvenience is if I need to get something out of my pocket, which is rare. Cigarettes, lighter and cell phone always get dropped into the center console as soon as I get in the car.

Also, the one time I had airbags blow up in my face, I'm glad I was wearing the seatbelt. I'm tall and skinny and I sit with the seat pretty far back. The seatbelt caught me and I didn't touch the airbag. All it did was give me a little bit of a brushburn on my left wrist and some busted knuckles on my left hand where they hit the side window.

Im a young driver, the kind that th'poh-leese like to pick on. I drive a rusty beater. I won't wear my seatbeelt if I know where Im going. If im out fer a drive to kill time, it goes on. Why? I don't know, its the way I do things. Seatbelts have saved my arse twice so far. Once when I was driving down Hwy 41 at 3am just south of Bon Echo. I went to turn down Head Rd. (Left hand turn) the fellow behind me pushed the rear of my car into a spin, into a tree, rolled over a ditch and landed about 20 yards from the Hwy 41. Other driver didn't even stay. Car was wrote and what pissed me off the most is that all my damn tools were spread all over the fawkin' road. First accident, I'd had my G2 for 13 days and I was still 16y.o. I got bruised bad but I walked away minus a socket-set and one crappy Ferd car.

Second time was back in September, going on a nice stock-friendly trail-run, I was driving a friend's stock 1987 Suzuki Samurai with 31's and 2" bastard pack leaf-lift. I got being stupid, tried a bad line and rolled that bugger like it was a bowling ball. thebelt saved my ass 'cause when it went over, the seats got loose but the belt locked up and stuckme to my shakey old seat. One totalled Sammy, one bruised kid and one group of laughing wheelers.

Quota filling.
Revenue souce for the town.

nuff said.

The cops got pissed when AAA purchased an ad space along the highway that reads "speed trap" ahead and that's just wrong. The sign was more consistent with the intent of the law, which is to encourage people to back off their speed for safety. Instead of praising, cops got pissed, because it plummeted traffic violation revenues and their quotas.

When I was six I saw my dad go through the windshield of our car; I was in the front seat.
He did it protecting me from going through.
Life isn't so simple though...

If your in a car by yourself, belts are optional.
I survived two T-bones, and the one was at a 45 MPH direct driver door hit by a semi. I had to be cut out.
If I wore my belt I would have died 10 years ago.
