I think the excavating guy felt bad for me.

He gave me the wood moulding in the last picture, as a souvenier. I think he thought it would make me stop crying... I hoped he couldn't tell lol.

I gotta get myself together to go to work

Thanks again for everything guys and I'm not gone quite yet.

This sucks, I still don't understand how this happened. The house has been standing for decades. I bet this has something to do with the damn arson down the street. I hate vandals.

Was the place structurally sound enough to rebuild?
I looked at the demo pictures and the foundation that was left looked to be no more then some stones and bricks loosely mortared together

The value of a dollar is worth more than a historic building I guess. Yes it's sad.

The ironic part of it - if the land is turned into a new fancy development, it's so close to the freeway that all you hear 24/7 is the sound of cars speeding by...

No problem. They'll just put up one of those nice sound barrier walls between the highway and the McMansions.

I had a nightmare that the house burnt down on Monday night. Made my Dad drive by the house Tuesday morning. Everything was ok. Then I wake up Wednesday to hear that the house is gone. I'm pretty well devastated. They almost sent me home from work I was in such bad shape. Kinda lame, I know...

In life things comes and thing goes (just like...people!) just some things people develop more of an attachment to then others, and it's sad when it suddenly disappears without a chance for one last look or goodbye (now I'm starting to sound lame!)

Maybe after the mourning, getting out there and looking for another forlorn place would cheer you up There's groves of them out there, just look at all the ones fedge and IanK have been digging up!

Keep it fuzzy.

Yep, I agree with Mr. Fuzzy. The Claremont/NewCastle/Bowmanville/MapleGrove/Courtice/Scugog area must have a lot of hidden gems, thanks to evidence from fedge and iank.

...Now, I reeeeeeally don't want to play Devil's Advocate here, nor am I conspiracy theorist. -But- my Spidey Sense is kinda tingling on this one. Is it possible that a Developer/Company got a little 'antsy' once they found out somebody had been sniffing around a property that they owned and had kinda forgotten about? Pair this with possible insurance claims in the area due to arson.... ?? Like, get rid of it before this becomes a bureaucratic headache?

Out on a limb here....feel free to push me off that limb

chevygirl... I feel for ya. You had your heart in the right place, and the support of many people here.

good luck on the next one. -i know you will find another.

I felt so guilty about looking around and digging for all the information -- I thought that the company that owned the house found out and tore the house down before I could do anything to preserve it. Afterall, the land was worth more with no house on it.

My Dad is positive they were just tired of people in it, destroying it, and just took it down anyway, but... sometimes I'm not so sure.

... and thanks

i'm still here

this is going to sound a little weird, but i feel like i just lost a friend.

I hear you chevygirl. I felt the same way when the Whitby Psych was demolished. A group of us were in the process of trying to get some of the buildings saved but we're too late. Should have started back in 1995.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

My Dad just found some of the coolest things ever.

Nails, from the wooden moulding that I was given. They have a square head and a flat tipped bottom... made by a woodsmith in the late 1800s...

I just thought that was kinda cool!

The nails? Or the wooden molding?

The wooden thing is a corbel. They are decorative support structures for the house facia. The nails are likely hand forged iron flat heads. Its a very unique corbel for the amount of pieces that have been joined together to form one. Most corbels are more square-ish, and that one is far more sculpted.

No Prob. One day we should organize a local area show and tell with all of the antiquities we've found (of course, legit ones) and try to document them all based on history. I metal detect a lot and have found weird things.

BTW...Lydia Trull's pot that she used to make herbal remedies with is in the local museum. Oh...and I bet you she not only learned medicine from her early days in the NE US, but also from local native Canadians...

Okay Im clearly a big geek...LOL (Im like the rainman of local history. No infringement intended on the great rainman from uer!)
