One major reason nobody cared (or not enough people) about Southview and Trull Manor, is they were in the area of Courtice. What is Courtice? What was Courtice?

Courtice is a sad example of whats happening with amalgamation and suburbanization. The best examples of the old 'town' of Courtice are gone. Courtice Road and Hwy 2 (Roy Nichols Motors area) is where (Im near certain) the old downtown centre was. It wasnt much, but it was the area where farmers would meet, purchase goods, etc. A few buildings remain in the Trulls rd and hwy 2 area...notably the stove shop, which has been horribly converted.

Without a strong town identity, no historical society sprung up, hence preservation efforts for buildings such as the aforementioned ceased to exist. Towns need a fairly large number of 'ol timers', that is, direct descendants of pioneering families in order to prevent such losses. UER is literally the best records for the those buildings I have come across of yet. Bowmanville has a strong heritage preservation effort, but unfortunately, I assume it cannot safeguard buildings in adjacent areas.

Do not give up Chevy. Was that the only building of the Trull family? No. Are any possibly left? Yes. Get some old maps and start searching. That house was added on several times, most notably in 1885. Captain Trull settled at the turn of the 19th century and owned a massive amount of land in the area. Surely something else exists. Let me know if you need help, but I am certain there is more left to the Trull legacy. The good news is that sometimes the loss of a few, insprire, motivate, and drive many to prevent the loss of far more.

I'm up for that, I might be able to find some old maps and such. I live in an old house in Bowmanville and I know a few people who might have some information.

I'm so disappointed that Courtice doesn't have any history. The oldest buildings here are probably the High School (1963 or something) and a few other scattered ones.

It's actually kind of disappointing that Courtice doesn't have that much of a history. That's, I'm guessing, part of the reason I was so excited about Trull Manor.

I'd love to look more into the history of the area, and the history of the land, but I think I'm going to have to get some $ for that. It's $25/hr for the Bowmanville Museum to do searching for you. And other than that, I don't really know where to start.LOL

Become a member of the Museum/archives like I am. Then you can have them search for free. They helped me research my previous home owners back to 1919! (I still need the owner from 1914-1919 though!)

There is history, but its not well known. The Church on Courtice rd is veryyyyy old. And the original Courtice family homes still exist...all old. Get the digital maps from online to help for a start.

OMG...you have to see the Bowmanville Museum and Archives. Its in Bowmanville at 62 Temperance St (technically its a good portion of a block btw Temperance and another that jogs my mind).

I think my annual membership is no more than 20 some odd bucks, and it gets you searchs, free admission into museums, etc.

Its too bad you missed the Gaud house that used to be here...ask Fedge for some pics. Boy was it cool.

There a two parts to the bowmanville museum, it is on Wellington st, which you can take off of Liberty st. Go off of Liberty street at Wellington and continue untill you come up to an old big building across the street from a school, it will be on your left.

I don't understand the directions leading to Temperance st, I don't think it goes that far. I might be wrong, but I went to the school across the street for six years.

[Edit: It is on 37 Silver ST, you should be able to ask directions, if you are going today. Message me, and I can show you to it.

In fact, there is a pathway between the two through the garden, connecting them. Charles showed me that short cut.

my dad moved in about 16 years ago. the place was in bad shape then. it was a split dwelling. there was a family living in the front and my dad rented the back. the place was full of garbage, the walls were brown. the carpets had bald spots.
there were alot more trees and there was virtually no yard at all. my dad cut down alot of trees, and mowed the lawn back, and he kept a mowed trail down back behind the barns. there used to be two of them, but one fell down. when the front of the home went vacant my dad decided to rent the whole place the rent was VERY CHEAP!
my dad spent alot of effort fixing up the home, internal and external, and landscaping. the yardwork was very tedious, but midsummer it looked great. there is a picture of it up at the courtice dentist office.
my dad also added on the extra porches and back deck.
about 5 years ago my dad heard through the grapevine that the place might go up for sale, so he moved.
i really wanted to move in but his brother in law got it first. he couldnt pay his rent so when he moved out i moved in.
my family enjoyed a lovely 2 and a half years there. and when it finally sold, we moved.
i was moving all my stuff in a car, so it was taking forever, and before i could completely move somebody broke in and had a few beers and stole the antique bathtub. i was pissed off because i still had alot of stuff there. the very next day somebody kicked in all the doors. they threw a porn magazine all over the place and shit on the floor. i tried to get my most important things and leave behind what i didnt need. the very next day the place was completley trashed. like animals had torn the place apart. i was so disgusted and angry. that day i was cleaning in the front room, it was my library, i have a tonne of books. anyways i was in the library and some red truck came down the driveway, so i went out to go say hi and they backed out and sped off. i think these people may have been the ones who distroyed the place.
ive never been back since.
ive always wanted to go sift through the mess and the yard for stuff, but never got around to it. it was just a couple days ago my bud told me it was gone. soo sad. i spent many years exploring the yard with my pellet gun. many bonfires late at night. my dad hanged a huge tarzan swing from the tree. i still used it about 15 months ago.sometimes i open old boxes from there and i get that smell. its gross really, old and mildew, but it reminds me of that house.

we didnt own it. we rented from an investment company. some guy from hong kong bought the place in the 1950's for 1.5mil and fixed it right up. i dont know why but he moved back to hong kong and let the home be passed around in his family. it was cool because we NEVER saw our landlord once. the family who lived there first gave my dad the address to send the cheques to, so he just kept paying rent and never heard from anyone, unless we contacted them for some reason.
the asking price was 2.5mil but i dont know what it actually sold for. it sat on 30 acres.the adjacent fields were owned by the same company but i dont really know if they sold with the place or not, but im pretty sure they did.
as you read on the wall the place was built in 1812 by j.w.trull, and lydia trull.
an early story tells of apack of natives invading the home, and gathering in the kitchen, they did not speak english and could not communicate with lydia. they opened the cupboard and took the white flour. they instructed everyone in the home to hold their hands out. they carefully divided up the flour amongst all of the people present, native and white. after the flour was divided, the natives vanished, not harming anyone, rather leaving them with their hands full of flour.
ive also heard of hermit witches that lived there before the chinese bought it. the details of these witches are sketchy, but they had many poodles.
i also read a story online about some lady who watched her husband beat her children to death so she brained him with a shovel and buried all of them in the (walls?)
there were patches in the cement floor in the basement. probably worth investigating, but i never wanted to desecrate the home. i was offered big bucks for the front banister and staircase, but i didnt want to destroy the place.
one day the new owner walked down the driveway, i used to keep it locked way down at the end, near the road. i saw these people walking up so i went outside to tell them to go away and they said they just bought the place for the site of a factory, and to take my time moving, no rush. they also said they wanted to restore the home for office use. so i didnt want to ruin any hisoric quality.
since then the place has been trashed and torn down. kinda bugs me because ive picked up photography and always wanted to go back there for a shoot. then i heard it was gone.

Thanks for the personal side on Trull Manor! I am always amazed when previous inhabitants of uer homes find the site and add information.

The home must have been added on to later in the 1860s, as the large house as it sat was not as 1812. I have found a few references to it being that old, and maybe part of it was, but it dated from the 1860s-1880s, meaning Lydia would have been dead by then.

I have heard the story of the natives and dividing the flour before, but I was not sure where that ocurred.

I wish you had saved the newel post. From the pictures, it seemed really amazing. If you can remember any more information, please post it! We all appreciate it.

Background from the museum in Bowmanville:

The pic looks like it was taken in happier, though somewhat more recent times. Thank you for detailing the last inhabited years of Trull, backasore! Sorry that Trull will only live on in memories for you.

Here's the tree fort out back (I think the Tarzan swing was hung from this tree as well):

Thanks for your part of the history of this house backasore. I love old houses and their history, who lived there and what they were like. I just can't understand for the life of me why people let them go to ruin. I know sometimes it can't be helped.

I figured out what's wrong with life:
It's other people.

I am glad you shared all this information with us backasore. I remember the place when someone{you} were living in it. I had driven down that road during the day and thought the place might be empty, but then at night i drove by on my way home and seen it was lit up. And then one day it was listed on this site. Surprised the heck out of me and i had always wondered the exact date that someone{you we now know} stopped living there. Hope to hear more on the place. Thought the stories were dead and gone with the building but the house is living on here in these forums thanks to you and everyone else that has contributed there stories

I wandered into the yard in August/September 2005 for the first time and it was fairly messed up even then, picked over by many vandals. It even looks like as if a Halloween party had been staged there - perhaps from October 2004 then?
