firecrackers/explosions will make them think you have a gun and you are more likely to get shot...whether you have a gun or not.

I'm in favor of smoke too. Firecrackers could get you into a lot more trouble. Cops will think of gunshots first and firecrackers second. That means you can expect all the cops they can get, guns drawn, and an increased chance of getting shot by a scared police officer who thinks he sees a gun instead of a camera. | | | I just had a run in with the police on Friday exploring a rooftop of a shopping center with a friend. Buddy called me and told me someone called the cops after he saw my friend. Found a secondary exit the man who was watching for us couldn't see and got the hell down and meet up with another friend until the 5 local squad cars, and few state cops and the firetruck left so I could get my car.

| | | There doesn't seem to be much security or cops around where I am. I go exploring building sites and have never even seen security. They do put fences up, but they are really easy to jump.

I used to like track pants, the degree of flexibility they offer is great, but I need to be able to carry stuff in my pockets, and having my pants fall because of a pocket knife clipped on is fucking ridiculous. Hence the small sacrifice in getting some khakis. Also I need some protection for my lower legs when I plow through poison ivy, pointy bushes or rusty shit. Anything that doesn't stick to your knees (I hate this about jeans...) and isn't too tight works, really.

| | | I've only encountered police once, but my fellow explorers and I just ran. We probably covered a few miles before making a hike back to our vehicles. Most of the places I explore are rural, but I've even been in a building directly across from a police station and jail. Just be very aware of your surroundings, know the area, keep light away from windows, and don't be stupid. You'll probably be fine.

I would suggest that the longer you keep at it, the higher the probability you'll eventually just fall foul of bad luck or unfortunate timing, no matter how careful you might be.
|
yeah, i could understand certain unlucky situations. but 99% of the time it's somebody doing something stupid making a mistake.
Regardless, good parkour skills will take you far. |

We wish though!" (silly move but we got them to chuckle). We were there on the ground for a good 5 minutes while they searched our bags and cameras. "You two faggots taking naked pictures of each other up here?" "What kinda gays do this shit"

I wear old jeans (out of habit), unless I really need to manuever. Then I go with long cargos. Though, the bagginess can be a drawback.
Behind every mistake, there is a lesson. I'm just not that great at learning them! |

I fully agree here. I wear a pair of inexpensive, but nice looking khakis. I usually wear a black raincoat over the top, it's actually pretty nice. So I look kind of well-to-do. The bonus is that if you're ever cornered and can't run, looking sharply dressed can actually get you out of a jam. Today, I was exploring a building. The only way in was across a field, so I kind of jogged across and went in through a window. Not 5 minutes inside I hear "Police, come out with your hands up!". That window was the only way in or out so I was stuck. I just walked out and when the officer asked me what I was doing, I showed him the camera. He said, and I quote, "Well you definitely don't look like a crackhead. Just use more common sense next time and be careful." I went from having a shotgun literally pointed in my face to a hand shake and joking about the weather in the span of 60 seconds because of the way I dressed. This is actually one time when I try to look as conformist/prep school as possible, because no one expects it. Security/police expect a scuzzy gang banger, when they see a well dressed photographer, they're usually so relieved they just tell you to leave. That's just my experiences anyway.
