"...Don't get caught!" Simple as that.
BUT... If you are dumb enough to get caught, If you are in a position to hide or run from the cops, Do so. but only if you think you can. If your in a position with a cop 10 feet from you, Best bet is running is not the best option. If you are caught where your not supposed to be and theres no other way out. Be respectful atleast. | | | stay low, lights only when needed, keep a camera its a good cover, dont go in looking like a navy seal or anything like that, all seem like good things to do. also, i'd think that another good idea would be... just stop and think about what your doing. but what the hell i really dunno, only places i explore so far are old houses from the 30's and a old juvie hall. but i usually listen to what my paranoia says, and thats stay low and only use lights when needed and hide the car in plane sight and walk my lazy butt to where i need to be.

| | | Here's my two cents on the subject.... If you get caught by a cop, don't run, be nice be responsible. If you run into a private security officer my understanding they are really just private citizens. Therefore I vote for the blind them and run like HELL approach. If your going to a high risk site and feel the need for a scanner, have someone with a scanner sit in the car with a radio to you, if they hear bad stuff on the scanner, just get out before the cops come! On another note, I make it a habit to remove my cameras memory card before leaving sites. Then if you get off the private land before the cops come, they have to have a lot of proof to search your person....

| | | I don't usually try to elude the police at all other than standing still. If they are there then most likely there has been a complaint and you have already been discovered. I usually walk right up to them and say hi and tell them why I am there. They feed me their mumbo-jumbo about the place being unsafe and the potential for injury and the trespassing laws etc. Then they let me leave.

| | | The best course of action is to simply do what the cop says. It's not worth the hassle of running just to avoid being told to leave.

nope, they just need "probable cause", and their "probable cause" is their was a recent break in at "la-da-da" by a young white male, you also happen to be a young white male, "lemme talk to ya kid", I don't buy you're bullshit story *handcuffs on* "spread em". have a coworker who was pulled over, had scratch ticket fillings on his dash [tickets were on the passenger side]. cop goes "looks like weed to me" searches him, actually arrests him for having 1/4 ounce in his back pocket, lols. But the dash board turned out to be from scratch card. My Point: Cops will do whatever the fuck they want, but there's one thing cops hate and that's the shitload of paperwork that goes along with cases, and the more information they have to add to the case or an arrest the more paperwork, so the more shit you do, the more work they have to do. If you can make their day easier [walk out say hello, be nice, explain what's going on, etc.] they may make yours too.

| | | if they just suspect you and they want to search you and they dont have a pretty good reason ( depending on your lawyer) and you say, no you cant, anything they search of you cant be used against you. As for running, it depend on the location. If there are tons of photographers in and out most days, its probably best to just talk to them. If its a well sealed location where they clearly try pretty hard to stop entry, then run. If your really up for an intense footchase, its a lot better to escape through backyards as opposed to strait down a street, or across a parking lot, no matter how fast you are. OR if you do most of your exploring in canada in the neck of winter the police would much rather stay in there nice and warm car.

| | | Yesterday I posted "Sebastian Melmoth's UE Whitepaper", check it out for a lot of tips on dealing with authority figures (as well as a bunch more good advice): http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=54184 To quote..."Appearing harmless (and foolish) can be a big plus in dealing (on site) with inquisitors. Casually dressed mixed groups or couples are less threatening to authorities than, say, eight big guys wearing cammos and face paint. Police on a call to a creepy abandoned place all have one thing in common. They are scared to death. Law Enforcement is a field that (whether deserved or not) constantly brings scorn and focused animosity on it's practicioners. They are always expecting to be killed. This feeling is exacerbated in an abandoned building, a place that affords limitless dark niches for harboring a potential assassin. Quick moves, furtive gestures, running away (you could be escaping one officer by accidently slamming headfirst into his partner) are not good ideas." If you carry a camera with a big honkin' lens, don't dress like a ninja, and know enough background about the place you're exploring to politely bore the cops with your enthusiasm for its history, etc., they'll often write you off as a crackpot rather than a criminal and let you go with a warning. Additionally, if you explore with a good friend of the opposite sex and are young enough, you can pass as a couple looking for somewhere to make out or screw, which usually plays sympathetically. Worst thing you want to do in any case is act or look guilty.

| | | The one thing all leos hate is being lied to. Never lie when the truth would serve you better. If you do lie, do so by omission rather than telling a direct lie. Any info, true or false, gives a starting point for them to work from... A simple, direct approach is most often the best.

| | | Step one: Get out of or get to the perimeter Step two: just treat them like humans (in the south say "yes sir and yes ma" Step three: When asked say "i think i saw (or heard) somebody walking in over in that other side" When this happened to me they just gave us a big talk and we just went on our way. Here something interesting on how the patrol. They say they patrol areas that have graffiti more then others places. http://biz.yahoo.c...s_burned.html?.v=1

| | | in drains unfortunately radios cant help but perfect for abandonments.. carry a spare mem card if u have a camera, a card that has lots of still life and photography buff shots on it... they can and will confiscate ur camera as has happened here - in fact some ppl here recently were stopped and checked over just for standing on a public street taking photos in daylight re the whole terrorism laws introduced in oz ( no excuse needed by smurfs basically) especially with digital cameras now that it takes 10secs to review images on the spot ;and bingo, instant incrimination
otherwise i agree, be nice first....obviously a seccer charging with a baton or leading a vicious dog is not a sign of diplomacy...but with cops relax, be honest, be straight up - nothing screams chase me im guilty like running for it having said that, if no one has actually seen you, no harm in running or hiding where possible

In drains... you probably shouldn't need 'em anyways. Unless you're spotted sneaking down a manhole, drains are relatively low key. And if you are confronted by a cop, just keep your mouth shut, simple yes or no answer's. Don't give them a lot of information, the less the cop knows about who/what you are the better. He'd probably like to be able to go on his way and not have to fill out the 60 pages of paperwork he's going to have to fill out; if he is forced to arrest your ass for trespass. Another way to not be bothered by people; act like what you are doing is exactly what you are supposed to be doing. Act like there's nothing wrong about your actions or your intentions (and there isn't right... ;] ) And most people will just pass you on by. Some people love to cause drama, love to be the one to call the police at every little thing. Chances are a. this isn't the first time the nosy neighbor next door has called the police with a false alarm. and b. the cop probably knows it. It's his job to have to respond to calls like that; he would like nothing more to send you on your way, rather than make your night (...and his own a LOT more difficult) Just use your head, and besides you can always return later.

| | | The police scanners also pick up big companies. I use the police scanner when I'm around the railroads. Google scanner frequencies and you will find them easily. here a picture of a coal mine near a big rail yard with an flooded abandon tunnel. I got my gear with the scanner.

| | | Just today, my friend and I went to the Manchester roundhouse for some afternoon UE. I just dropped him off at his house afterwards when I got pulled over for my expired inspection. All my gear was in the back of my truck and my camera was right in the passenger seat full of images. He was cool and just gave me a warning. I just thought it was kinda ironic to get caught for something totally different. However, eluding police is something you just dont do in my book. More often than not, they will catch you. You cant outrun a radio, plus hiding and sneaking away is a fantastic way to piss them off.

Therein lies the problem; you never know when you might encounter a cop or other leo. Sometimes a nut case will see your cam and rat you out as a "terrorist", or as happened to me when I was packing my 30 odd six tripod sniper... tripod. Most cops are ok unless you give them a reason to be suspicious. Eluding them in a sure fire way to piss them off and get them ready to rock. To them hiding is the same thing... and once they get wound up, things are much more difficult.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |
