Caught! Ask me no questions I’ll tell you no lies. Pt 1. & Pt 2.

In our hobby it is unfortunate that sometimes we may find ourselves on the other side of the law. We of course did not intentionally break the law but because it is sometimes at odds with our desire to explore, a minor infraction is sometimes necessary. The purpose of this tutorial is, to inform the individual what steps to take to protect the integrity of the team should one become separated and compromised.
It would seem that in most cases people are usually caught together in the thick of an exploration. The immediate reaction is usually to try and find a good hiding spot and stick it out, or to try and evade capture together. However the best way to avoid being compromised is to keep moving. This can be problematic as in our hobby we are often going in to places that we don’t know very well, or have few exits.
First and foremost, before starting any mission that may be construed as high risk, i.e. active security, alarms, workers, caretaker. Anything that may involve the possibility of capture, charges, and subsequently the questions that follow. A rendezvous point should be established. This is an area back from the site where you will meet should you become separated from the group. It only takes a minute to set this up, the vehicle you came in, a big tree, something you all recognize as the spot to meet. If you really want to do things right, a secondary fall back position should be decided on as well, even a third, a local coffee shop, or 24 hr convenience store. Especially if your rendezvous point is the vehicle, depending on the situation, the vehicle may in fact have been flagged and is being watched by authorities. For this reason it is important to have either a secondary fallback position, or a rendezvous that is not the vehicle.
Next, omfg cops! Security! Old man Brown! We’ve got to get out of here! So you are now the hunted, its good to try and stick together, but splitting up will give you the advantage. If you split up they can’t catch you all, some of you will make it to the R.V. point. If it’s the vehicle, you want to insure the area is clear before proceeding. This can be an issue for other members of the group if they have not arrived and you are their transport, or they are yours. If you are the key master it may be wise at this point to take the vehicle and move to the secondary fall back position. It should also be noted that a window of time be decided on at the start as to how long the rest of the group will wait.
At this point communications can be key, it may be that individuals that have not arrived at the R.V. point are still a) on the run. b) Hiding, or c) simply unable to make either point. Hopefully if you are not carrying radio’s you at least have mobile phones to communicate with. If this is the case it may be time to go, of course if you are really worried about your friend/s you may want to walk back and do a reconnaissance. This may lead to your capture. If your conscience tells you it is necessary then you must.
So what now? Everyone got away but you, first off look at your shoes kick some dirt and say shucks. The man got you who ever he is. This sucks, be prepared to be verbally abused and accused of everything under the sun. The reason for this is to put you on the defense and scare you into talking. Assuming you have taken all the necessary pre-cautions this is not a problem. You have a great story ready, and incidentally it is the same as everyone else’s in the group should multiple people have been caught.
The Story, so this is how things happened, you were on line talking to some of your buddies in the forum, not any related to UE of course. You were actually in the some cheesy forum like say, http://www.clubvibes.com/index.asp You have taken the precaution of setting up an account using your first name and a fake last name. The reason for using a fake last name is; with the rise of identity theft it is not wise to use last names for personal email accounts, and on forums. Soooo, when they ask you the names of your cohorts you simply give them first names only. This will seriously perturb the attending officer, but you simply reply you never thought it was important. You see the way this all started was… You were online talking with some buddies about a recent episode of law and order, it featured something called urban exploration, you and your buddies whom you know from the forum, thought it would be fun to go out and try. You made plans to meet at a local coffee shop and then headed out. You were all in high spirits as you were trying something new and exciting. Of course now you realize just how stupid it was. You may be asked, “Well if you are just a beginner why do you have so much sweet gear” or something to that effect, well you were a boy scout and as they say “be prepared”. At this point you will obviously have to divulge your own identity, and it is highly suggested that you comply with all demands and be as courteous as possible. If you cope attitude, they will give you a hard ride.
The whole point of the story is that you are a T.V. watching dough head who got some lame idea in his head, went out to do it and got busted. So please officer have mercy on me. All those other folks ran off and left little ole me to get busted. I’m idiot. This way if any charges do come your way, only you will get them not the rest of the group and you will have been co-operative with the fuzz.

Personally not running works best for me, I've had my run-in's with the 5-0 and I've never really chased after. But one time my and two of my friends had been searching an construction site and the cops had pulled up. we were about five or Six floors above them and the stairs being the only way up we felt Farly safe.they parked two cars north of the building and had woken up several homeless people and started questioning them (how this had anything to do with some alarm being set-off in the building i have no clue) we descended the outside of the south side or the building and headed into the nearest restaurant calming we were in desperate need of a bathroom The police never had a chance to find us.

we were exploring a house next to a police station and a cop was out in the lot doing paperwork. he saw us and we saw him. our eyes locked and i got this sensation in my chest...

just kidding. we asked him if it was okay to continue exploring and he was cool with it.

honestly if a cop knows yr not fucking anything up and yr just there to take pics, what do they care? thats one less hooligan they have to arrest. said time can be spent at one of their favorite doughnut-terries

face them I'd say. It'd be easier to try and talk your way out of it with a real cop than get away, unless you can surely get away (seen from across a field with plenty of cover, etc.). Security, that's different. Civilians... HA.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

If you have NOT been seen I say try and leave quickly but calmly or if you are in a location you feel is a GOOD place to hide then that works also. If it is a private security guy then decide if you are far enough away that you CAN get out, if so then I say do it. If you HAVE been seen by police and they look suspicious then look friendly and go their direction. Walk right past them and give them a brief smile and/or wave and just keep going like nothing is going on. If you have been seen by police and they actually call out to you go right over to them and ask if you can help them, or that's what I would do. I have found if you act like you belong where you are doing exactly what you are doing (unless obviously NOT supposed to be) you have a high probability of being left alone.

The best tip I can ever give if you get caught (by anyone)...

Make the first move. In an interrogation situation, authority and control is generally established within seconds. Police are trained to establish this control by making the first move, usually by speaking first and speaking hard.

In a conversation with two people involved, one will always be the dominant one.

Your goal is to become this guy. Establish contact first and in a firm way (don't be a pushover) and it will probably go your way.

I know someone who was exploring a hospital. They were approached by police when they were making their way to teh entrance. The cop asked what he was doing. He replied truthfully..."Just taking some pictures". The officer said he was not allowed to do so. Before the cop could go any further this guy says(in a slightly annoyed tone and in a bit of an angry way) "What?? I can't even take some pictures?? Whatever, I am leaving! this is ridiculous!!!" and he just stomped away.

The cop was dumbfounded by his reaction and did not persue him.

I would not recommend doing this, but it fits the topic.

This reminds me of a story...

Two of my friends and I were exploring an abandoned mill next to a river. The mill was composed of two derelict buildings that were next to a number of other mills, all of which were actively used as apartments. We explored the first building, and then noticed that a covered bridge connected the nicer of the two derelicts to an in-use apartment building. We wanted to go through the bridge but found it sealed. This did not deter us, however, as we then proceeded to climb through a broken window and on top of the covered bridge, completely exposed and unanchored, six stories above the hard unyielding cement. Not one of our more intelligent moments.

I was the first across and waited on the active roof while the first of my two friends mounted the bridge. Just then, we heard a voice command, "Get the hell out, or I'm calling the cops!" My friend dropped back down into the window, and I flew back across the bridge's roof. We raced down the stairs to our entrance point, which was facing the apartment building, but turned back when we heard footsteps.

Climbing back to the roof of the first derelict, we reached a rusty iron catwalk that linked the two abandonments together, also six stories high. We bounded across and were at the top of the second mill. This mill was literally hollow, presumably having been burned by a fire, and offered only a few safe ways down. We slid down pipes, climbed down fences, and dropped from overhangs.

Just as we were headed for this building's door, and figuring we were in the clear, we heard more footsteps, definitely approaching and headed our way. I noticed a small hole in the wall of the mill, the wall that was facing the river. We squeezed through and found ourselves on a narrow edge above a cement walkway that was ten feet below. Dropping down to the walkway, we ran as fast as we could away from the building and along the river towards more apartment buildings, through which we exited and lost ourselves in the general flow of foot traffic.

I really wish it was that dramatic. Still was fun.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

Take a camera and if a cop sees you, walk right up to the cop and say hi. As a photographer the law is much more lenient towards you than towards a person who isn't a photographer. The cop will know this and will probably be annoyed by the fact he can't really do anything except intimidate you, so make sure you smile big for the cop, take a photo of him (especially of his badge) and watch him walk away.

If a police officer catches you trespassing, just sporting a camera is not going to help you.

And how to define a photographer in said situation?

A kid with a pocket camera? Some pierced and tattooed punk with dark, dirty clothing with flashlight, respirator and Canon Rebel in a surplus military pack? Decently dressed adult with pro-looking camera gear?

I would rather try to explain what I'm doing (I don't fancy advertising "UE", so when asked I'm only taking pictures because I find the place interesting due to its architecture / history etc.) and be as nice and polite as possible. And always have some form of ID with you. And as exkalibur said, take the initiative, and try to be the person who kind of runs the conversation.

http://listverse.c...trunning-the-cops/

what many have discussed is not "eluding" but essentially "social engineering"...

my method is simply make the cop not want to follow you and don't let him get you're plates

run through pickerbushes or something the cop won't ... drive like crazy making it too dangerous for the cop to chase you... something to that effect.

I've only outran what I believed to be a cop or a firefighter on a backroad... they had a lightrack and were approaching my vehicle rapidly I was already going 25+ the speed limit [55 in a 30] I punched it to 70mph, started driving reklessly: drove in the left lane, swerved, etc etc... and got away from their line of sight just long enough to park at the town road dept.

It was a low traffic/low residential backroad, I know the road well and it was 3am ... so I wasn't worried too much about deer/other people... (deer bunk down 1am-4am in the dead of the night and are most active at dawn/dusk the local yokals come out anywhere between 4am-6am walking their dogs and stuff...)

I'm not sure if it was a cop... but whoever it was decided not to risk their life to chase me...

NOTE: if the cop does indeed decide to chase you ... you'll be twice as fucked because of risk of endangerment and all that my vehicle scenario was fairly unique in that I had a 300 yard head start.
And the cop did not have my plates. Had he been closer to me I would have definitely pulled over.
But I figured that I had a fairly good head start and I was already in danger of losing my license so fuck it...

"No risk, no reward, no fun."
"Go all the way or walk away"

The best thing to do if you are confronted by an officer is yell "Stop police!" during the resulting confusion, fire shots in the air (this is called cover fire) and make your escape. Works every time. He probably won't even call his buddies, or chase you.

If you decide to run or hide, first check wether it's a K9 unit or not. Usually K9 police cars are a bit different from regular patrol cars.

I would say if you have decent (convincing) photographic gear with you, face them.
