Its not like everyone didn't know about Firestone, but it would be great if you those of you who did get a chance to speak about it journalists would be a little concerned with what they actually wrote then getting your photo published.

COMPLETELY AGREED!

Hell no. Getting photos published is so much better than, you know, keeping the illegal activity discussion out of the public eye...

This is pretty fucked up. I assume this is one of the first times that explorers have been directly cited for the reason for demolition.

We all dropped the ball on this one... by being FAR too careless about details and information, as well as the way we acted on the property. I know a lot of people are going to respond to my statement with, "Oh, it's just Firestone, the town bicycle, who cares". The plant was vandalized and broken to an extent but it was off the beaten path for hooligans and vandals. This was really an ideal location for our purposes.

I'll miss the place. I'll miss it a lot.

It has also raised awareness with local politicians which may cause them to look at other properties in Hamilton.

well,we'll see if the city ACTUALLY does anything about it. I think they have bigger problems on the whole, but the singling out of the online ue community is not good for us as a whole, we need to be a little smarter when we yap about shit.

or take tittie pics while trespassing.

By the time the whole matter grinds its way through city council, I'm sure another year or two - at least - will pass before demolition, if that's even approved.

That seems unusual, though I suppose posting to Flickr means your photos - or at least the low-res versions - are technically in the public domain. Since the guy wasn't credited by his actual name, I doubt they sought permission.

wrong again kirk lady...

Well, maybe or maybe not wrong (I haven't checked either with him, or his photo stream) but you set the rights to your image and it is listed under additional information on the specific photos page. On my flickr photostream it says all rights reserved. What Martinho has done with his rights regarding the image, I dunno.

Wow oh wow, man this sucks. We Urban Explorers are getting blamed for the whole demo of Firestone. This place was a good place back in the day but man it's a shame we are getting blamed for this place to be demolished in the next while.

Way to go e-photog, way to go.

Why is he the one to blame? I wast taken to this place in the middle of the day while there were workers there. One of them would have been my sister. To blame one person is not right. I remember WT telling me about a group of people who were caught there after driving their vehicles inside of one of the buildings. An entire meet was caught and now people want to blame this one person? Come on thats sad and pathetic.

I'm not sure if the flicker account belongs to e-photog, but if you do a search of the place on flicker you will come across a few other accounts of people from here.

So trying to place blame no one person is completely ridiculous.

*edit I missed the last page of the thread....

As for this place being cited for possibly being the first in the city for demolition that would be false. The other place would have been Stelco on Wellington. This place is on prime land, look at what they did to that building next door that has a nice Pier. This int about us its just giving them an excuse.

The Stelco building they torn down on Wellington street became a parking lot for the hospital across the road. They anticipated the coming construction at the hospital and not they have this huge parking lot to accommodate everyone.

Oh and this is not a secret hobby anymore and has not for years and years.

The author of this article is a bit of a nitwit. Not only does she have a spelling mistake in the title, she also got this sentence "But while explorers may not been seeking anything sinister, the city says it's worried about its potentially liability." past proofreading - that's if anyone proofreads such tripe.
Besides, if as she claims the city is trying to keep people out, why on EARTH does she give directions including pointers on how to get in.
Not to mention the whole "thrill seeking" aspect is blown WAY out of proportion.

Doesn't Hamilton have bigger problems to throw taxpayers money at?

BTW, walls don't peel - paint does.

I don't like being that angry in the evening; ah, who am I kidding - I love it.

Everyone is to blame, however there have been a few instances when some members seemed to go out of their way to be a nuisance, and that's the reason why fingers are being pointed by some at others. Whether they should be called out on their mistakes or not... I don't know.

I don't consider it a "secret" hobby. But it is illegal and usually people don't brag about doing illegal things openly, especially to the public.

And for what it's worth, that meet was nearly two years ago, before the recycling plant was operating at current capacity (it wasn't even finished) It was at night and there were no workers on the property... the meet was 'busted' by Intelliguarde from the Rod Mill next door. They were more worried about us hopping the fence onto their property than us trespassing at Firestone.

It's a long running joke pertaining to the fact that he got busted there shooting a half naked model... I'm not blaming him directly, take a deep breath there champ, catch the next available exit and turn around.

You missed the point entirely.

There is no one person that is responsible for something like this happening, and whether it actually will happen anytime in the foreseeable future is a whole different question. Yup, many MANY of us are guilty of being WAY too liberal with posting location information and meta data in the images that we post, and being ridiculously wanton about the discussions that we have about locations on the public part of forums like this... That's our part in this shit.

My grievance here, is this ham-fisted clod of a fabulist is pulling more shit out of her ass than G.G. Allen. I've got no real problem with stories that cover photography of abandonments. Fuck, I even wrote one for a national paper, but it's the ridiculous crap that she's spewing is senseless and WAY off the mark.

Plus, the part which cracks my eggs the most is the fact that this professional writer, researcher, and steward of the fourth estate writes with all the eloquence of a grad student transcribing the arm wavings of Koko the gorilla.
