They have been aware for years now.

Also anyone interested in learning a lot more about the building, see this facebook group. The owner has posted tons of historic photos and information. It's quite amazing to go through.

The Century Theatre

The article in Saturday's paper stated the city wasn't aware of the structural situation of the building until last Thursday.

I wonder if anyone here got a chance to explore the building that was beside the Lyric:

I don't think that building was abandoned for long (or at all) prior to being demolished. That picture is dated 2001 and it was demolished in 2003. It certainly doesn't look abandoned there.

Who wrote the article?

It's bullshit that the city is lying like that. They knew about it very well and did nothing.

Perhaps the author of the article would be interested in that fact.

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

It's doubtful the spec knows.

And as biased as they are sometimes, they have shown evidence in the past that they aren't paid off.

I knew the place would fall eventually, but really, do they have to lie about it? Do they not know that it means a lot to a lot of us? And they cower behind lies.

You can't see it right now, but I am not making an amused face. NOT AMUSED, CITY COUNCIL, NOT ONE BIT.

do you realize how liable (and stupid they might look) if they admitted they did know and chose to do nothing? Although I won't be suprised by anything anymore...

It could raise awareness of the state of similar buildings in the city. There are, of course, pros and cons to that.

the author of the article is Nicole O'Reilly and the writer of the headline of that article "Century Poised to Fall" is Glen Knott, who is actively involved in conversations the arts community is having over the developments of the theater. i can assure you the newspaper is aware of the facts surrounding the theater and its demise, but they are limited in what they are allowed to print---they can't just throw their own city under the bus and cause a riot.

there is a gathering of local citizens taking place this friday at 7 pm (oops EDIT fri, feb. 5th) at the site of the century theater to document and report neglect of heritage buildings in the core. they will be reported one by one to the bylaw department.

it is a shame that the chosen headline of saturday positions it as though nature has taken its course. this was wilful neglect; "human nature" taking its course is how i would put it. knott's response to that comment is this,
I wrote that... Thing is, we had to scramble to position that story where it was, due to its importance, and it needed a big headline. Would demolished be better? Sure, but it wouldn't fit.

regardless, the newspaper seems to be paying attention to the uproar, as mentioned here;

http://thespec.com...cal/article/703323

also, the media attention seems to be moving the debate forward in council, as alluded to in this quote from the article,
During a council meeting yesterday, Councillor Chad Collins asked whether loan recipients who don't keep up their property standards are penalized.

Staff said they aren't, prompting Collins to request a report on whether the city should "reward people who have let their properties deteriorate."

Mayor Fred Eisenberger requested a report on the state of the city's demolition-by-neglect bylaw.

which means as long as the citizens are infuriated over the demise of the century, the media will continue to push council towards a solution until they finally reach a solution. i would invite anyone upset by the demolition of the century to show up on friday to document infractions and flood the by-law office until they cry uncle. this will accomplish far more than complaining in a forum where council will never see it or have to answer for it. this thread is very constructive in raising awareness, but more needs to be done. if anyone wants further information on feb 5th's gathering, contact me.

"What they are allowed to print"? What the hell are you talking about? Where exactly do you think we live? North Korea? Iran?

What exactly do you think the role of a newspaper is? To protect the government of the day? To make its residents feel good?

And you think the citizens of Hamilton would riot if they discovered that a historically interesting building had been allowed to fall into disrepair, to the point where the building may not be salvageable? Riot? Really? Maybe you mean "dozens, perhaps hundreds of them will be kind of upset"?

what i mean is, media is private enterprise, and the spec is in the business to sell papers, not to fuel scandals. if the spec decides to lambast city council members, the mayor, whatever private interests are involved in this trend of demolition by neglect again and again, mercilessly, do you not think there will be repercussions to that kind of reporting?

theyve already got their scandal, and theyre reporting it. they cant report allegations they are unable to prove, which was my original point. i can discuss this further with you in PM if you want, but id rather not derail this thread further from the topic of the theater itself, so im not going to argue further about this here.

I don't think very many people care outside of here, but your being pretty naive if you think papers print whatever they want. It could be very expensive for them to do that if they piss off the wrong people. Now if someone were to put up date stamped raw files and be forthcoming with emails they might have made informing the city about what happened, it might be a different story. But anonymous building huggers don't have much credibility.

I seem to recall an event years ago where the city wanted the spec to drop journalistic morals for them. The city got one hell of a fight.

I doubt if the spec knew they would hold it back without a good reason.

As for proof...it may or may not be around. I'll see what clicking brings up.

"The Spectator hired him (Estok) full time later in 1982 and he quickly
became a city hall reporter, working with the man who would become his
friend and mentor, Jerry Rogers. Together, they regularly skewered
Hamilton’s dysfunctional city council, their efforts culminating in a
municipal ...election where fully half the councillors lost their seats."

Cocov claims he needed extra money and incentives because it costs as much to build in Hamilton as it does in Toronto, but that properties here don't sell as high or as much. It would seem that is his excuse for being unable to keep up with his duties as a property owner.
