| | | Bryan, perhaps the point is that the developers *don't* care. They're a business. Businesses exist to make money, not preserve heritage buildings. Yes, it sucks to see another one fall. But, they didn't do anything illegal. I'm not disagreeing with the fact that its wrong to let a building crumble, but what choice do they have? They own the building, they *should* be able to do what they want. And, the difference between a vacant lot and busy sidewalk? In terms of liability, absolutely nothing at all.

sorry, i did not mean to offend. anyway, i think the lister block is a great success story and youre right, after Lister, people HAVE learned, namely the citizens that rallied for the building and proved that you can make a difference and actually save a building. LIUNA was going to demolish it. And council would probably have let it happen if we allowed them to. but we DIDNT. We SAVED it. Look at the picture, it's being renovated right now. This is not a hopeless cause. getting back to your comment about learning, the biggest thing we have learned is that if we want the city to encourage development of old buildings, we have to demand it, we CANNOT trust council and developers to do it themselves. and finding out when council meetings are taking place, attending them and speaking out, and organising rallies and so on isnt easy, but it is necessary. sitting around and calling council members unsavoury names on the internet is a waste of time and a bunch of hot air that accomplishes nothing.

I don't know why we can't at least keep some buildings of historical value around and perhaps not alter them greatly in order to save them. This doesn't seem to be an issue in other places in the world, most notably in Europe. This is probably because of a combination of things, including the fact that we don't have long histories nor do we have a culture of preservation. Don't you loooooove north american culture? No immediate use for it? Inconvenienced by it? then just destroy destroy kill kill kill.
Though in the case of places like lyric, it was unstable and unsafe. There was no economic way to save it. Unless money grew on trees. It's demolition, though sad, was necessary. So it goes.
I wish money grew on trees : (
