He means Breaking and entering with intent (348). Couldn't they charge them with it, since they had (n the opinion of police) a "criminal intent" of committing mischief.

He knows exactly what I meant. My friend was just being a smart ass.

Here's hoping its done tactfully.

My point exactly. I would hate to get caught/fined while exploring, not because I/my group F-ed up and got noticed, but because some newb heard it was cool to do this on the radio, waltzed in the location (or did something foolish like unicycle on a roof...) and got security/the cops all bent out of shape.

I think it's good to get people to think outside the box and try new things, it's just that the average person might not think to put as much thought and effort in it as most of us do and I'd hate to get my fun spoiled because of it.

Why assume that everyone on this site with full membership puts any thought and effort into what they do? You might, but there have been more serious incidents and run-ins with the authorities over the past few years with established members of uer than there have been with non-members. Any fun being had is more likely to be spoiled by long-term uer members pushing their limits (by which I mean pushing their luck) than by new people trying out a potential new hobby they heard about on a shitty altrock radio station.

yep.

I was sorry to hear they got charged... one would think the TO authorities would have gotten the memo about UE by now.

There are generally fewer drainers out there in most cities, and usually it's the exploration of abandoned building's that is emphasized by the news stories.

The drains are less visible to the public than the buildings.

Vacant and/or abandoned buildings are entered for many different reasons, be it taggers, scrappers, toilet smashers, ravers, thrill seekers, photographers, the curious, druggies and what ever else you could add to this list. Yes, even furries.

Drainers only fit into a one or possibly two of these catagories. There are very few furries that drain while in the fur suit, the material gets wet. Of course if your alter ego is that of a drain rat, then....... (I'll stop here, I don't know what I was thinking when I began this post.)

I'm just thinking of when Ninj was caught draining years ago when the practice was even more unknown, and the officers merely modified a parking ticket, gave it to him, and let him go on his way. After several years of an active UE community in Toronto, you'd think the cops would be at least a little bit clued in as to the harmlessness of UE people.

The hobby is probably more common here in the UK and has had tons of media coverage both in the papers and on TV, it still amazes me that the police generally have no idea about it all when you get busted.

As for a major influx of newbies, after exposure like this we generally get a load of extra web activity for a day or two and then it goes away. You get a few people signing up but they generally vanish too pretty quickly.
