| | | How do I move silently? As if to sneak around someone without gettting their attention? Expecilly indoors, outside is fairly simple with ambient noise. Could someone help me out?

| | | If the building is still operating, get yourself clad in some maintnance attire and just look like you belong. *Inspect* Stuff.
If it's outside of normal operating hours, and you want to remain inconspicuous and silent, try removing your shoes and walking on the floor with just your socks. Very quiet.

| | | i'm not a master of disguise... but i've noticed some things as i've walked down the street that may or may not help.
you guys can agree or debate these or whatever. they're just some observations 1)step on things that are soft but won't crunch... step on moss or grass instead of dry leaves. 2)when you walk... it seems like you'll make less noise if your feet touch the ground in only one place. 3)the shoes matter a lot.... the more they conform to your feet the better... i guess thats why tabi boots are good. (they are like socks, right?) big boots aren't shaped like your foot... and so its harder to be aware of where they touch things and stuff.
just some observations.

| | | Not that I have any experience with stealth, but what the heck, I'll give this a shot...
Footwear is very important. I do of course prefer my Tabi because they are made for the purposes of climbing and silent movement. A soft/flexible sole is what you want (Ghost has a set of combat boots with a very quiet rubber sole actually).
A key part of stealth is not necessarily not making any noise, but not making any noise which attracts attention. This is something most people don't relaize. The majority of the time, there are little noises, it's just they are always present so your mind will just tend to block them out. Generally, as long as you are quiet you're fine. When there is noise, as long as you only make noises that fit what is normally heard, you're fine. If you're travelling through bush, don't walk with a steady pattern. Move a bit, stop, etc. A noise here and there with no pattern does not seem like a person, it seems like an animal.
But you want to sneak past people indoors ? like a security guard ? what ? Kind of need more than what you're giving to give you the right advice...

| | | Personally, I don't own a pair of tabi boots. YET. Anyhoo, I try and walk as silently as possible AT ALL TIMES. It beats making a lot of click-clacking whenever you walk, and it's easier to sneak up on freinds this way. I do it at all possible moments.

| | | | | Re: Walking silently. <Reply # 5 on 4/7/2003 2:36 AM >
| | | There are techniques for walking silently. I practice a few. One of the most important things is muscle control. One method call Hai-Pu is to move the legs inwards and outwards like a half circle and distribute your weight slowly from one foot to another, touching with the ball of the foot first, and gradually shifting to the heel. similar to cat stance in Karate or loose ankle step in Tai-Chi Keep your hips level and your knees bent. Keep everything at the same level as you move, don't bounce up and down. your arms should be to the sides like an inverted V for balance. If in the dark, put your hands with fingers outstretched near your forehead with your elbows outwards and to the side. It looks silly, but the arms are in that position for two reasons. The first is so they can touch something in your way first, so you don't bump your head on something in the dark. The second is to break the human silhouette. If you want to stealth, the most important thing is to understand perception. The first thing a human eye sees is movement, the second, silhouette, and the third colour. The human silhouette is one of the easiest things for the human eye to distinguish.
Many people tend to thump their feet when they walk. learn not to do so. Use your muscles not your weight. Nowadays I can walk normally and people don't know I'm coming.

| | | You know, my old roommate hated me for doing stuff like that. Too many of our conversations would start out with something like:
(Me walking into room quietly) Me: Hey man, can I borrow yo- Him: AAAAAGH!! Don't do that! Me: okay.... I'll get a stapler from somewhere else then.

| | | Solid Shadow outlined exactly the textbook methods for moving silently. I know, I have "the Mystic Arts of the Ninja" book, lol... really... I do... Lots of very useful tips on techniques in there...
But silence and remaining unseen are two different issues... Again, he's perfectly correct about how we perceive shape. When remaining unseen, anything that can distort your human shaped outline helps. Camo appropriate to the terrain helps a lot. In stealth, it's better to be heard than be seen. It's common for people to *hear things* and then wonder if they really did. People believe their eyes far more than their ears, and thats a mistake...

| | | Definitely agree with Jester. That's why I outlined visuals as much as silence. It is far worse to be seen than heard. Another thing to remember is If you feel you may have been detected, learn to fight the reaction to flee. It's usually better to freeze and listen/look to make sure you are not really being detected. After something loud but minor happens, (Like someone running into a chain link fence or knocks something over, heh) most people will rabbit, which almost always gets them instantly detected. Basically, If you panic and rabbit, you will probably be detected, if you stop and wait, you may get lucky and discover you were not detected. This of course is always based on the particulars of the situation.
When I outlined colour as being the last thing the eye notices, it is assuming that the environment is dark. If you were wearing a red and white striped T-Shirt in the middle of a large field on a sunny day, colour will definitely move up the list.
Note of interest on footing. For silence, when it comes to placing the foot, you can touch with the ball of the foot first in situations where you cannot see the floor, basically you use the touch of the foot in a circular motion to sweep for good footing. If on a sure surface you can slowly place your foot on the outer edge of the heel/foot first and roll onto the rest of the foot slowly. Contrary to popular belief, the "Natural" way to walk, heel-toe, is based on culture. When the first Europeans landed on North American soil they were amazed that all the Native Americans walked Toe-Heel. It was quieter, made the legs stronger, took strain off the joints and was better for sprinting. Yet society still conditions us to walk heel-toe. Thump, thump thump. It doesn't surprise me how effective the Natives where in WW1 trench warfare with only their knives and their stealthy wits. My point is a general Zen principle. Anything you do is worth practicing, even something as seemingly basic as walking.

| | | On concrete floors and the like it should be very easy. I can't really offer much in the way of specific techniques, but when I was younger I used to spend a lot of time in the woods and could run through just about anything, even in the fall, without making much noise. The trick is to pay attention to the ground and make sure you don't hit anything that could be loud, while stepping as lightly as possible at the same time. Usually ran on my toes and wore soft shoes...

| | | I never knew those perception facts, that's pretty crazy stuff. One of the things though that has helped me in U.E. is track and field because not only does it keep me in shape, but more importantly if I do get caught, I can run away like a maniac. Another thing that has helped me is the use of the animal sound effects I can make.

| | | Walking toe-heel is definitely more quiet. You also don't bop up and down the way you do walking normally.
When I go up and down stairs, I don't standon my heels, but besides that, I don't bother with toe-heeling.

| | | It's almost impossible to sneak up on a Dog. They hear and smell on a far higher level than we do. That's why if I feel there might be dogs, I stay upwind and carry a baggie of beggin' Strips. Those bastards will usually stop for a snak sure enough. At least the ones I've seen.
