It's almost impossible to sneak up on a Dog. They hear and smell on a far higher level than we do. That's why if I feel there might be dogs, I stay upwind and carry a baggie of beggin' Strips. Those bastards will usually stop for a snak sure enough. At least the ones I've seen.

yeah same goes for a cat!

I avoid the whole issue of walking silently by simply not walking at all. I use my Professor Xtm brand hover-chair for getting around. It's great for getting over fences, but not so much for squeezing through tight spaces.

I checked out how much tabi boots are at this place in London, ON, but they're something like $69... and I just can't justify that kind of purchase right now.

On the other hand, the climbing claws and spikes were only something like $12.

The difference there is Your dog is used to you. It may not care if you are sneaking up on it. Try sneaking up on some dogs that don't know you. Maybe some on your block.

If you've had a dog for a pet, you generally know the signs of when its getting pissed off. you can sense the dog getting tense if your used to dogs, if that happens its generally a good idea to back off. Dogs hate pointed limbs coming at them (i.e. fingers) and are more likely to bite at those then a fist. I'm no animal expert, just thigns I've noticed with mine, and my friends dogs.

Its sad when not knowing is an excuse for those not willing to learn

Hmm, Darks Cats should do.

Also the guard dogs at spinelli Mazda were barking at us while we walked by, I proceeded to shine the flashlight at there eyes, and than they just started prnacing around playing with each other.

Is it possible to land completely silently when jumping from a hight.

I jumped out of my attic yesterday (about 2-3metres) and almost borke the lights in my kitchen downstairs, because i landed so heavy.

I am thinking specifically of Mission Impossible 2, and how silently Nathan sneaks in and jumps about.

What do you reacon? Is it really possible to move as silently as him, or is this just muted sound to make him look stealthy?

Yes it is possible to land silently from a height. Keep in mind that absolute silence requires a lot of training and practice (like ninjitsu). To land softly, bend your knees as you land. The more you fall, the more you bend your knees to absorb the impact. However, after a certain height, you'll need to roll right after the moment of impact in order to dissipate the kinetic energy. Usually, you would practice at shorter heights then move to higher jumps.
I leave it to you to figure out the details if you want.

lmao! hehe I've done that trick before. stomped too hard above the front entryway at my folks' house and heard the glass decorative light fixture crash to the floor. They weren't to impressed.

Anyways, this is all theoretical advice, as I am by no means a ninja or jumping expert. That said, I'd try to land on your toes first, then let your body sort of collapse/fold up to dissipate the energy contained in the fall as smoothly as possible. Try to find a slow-mo video clip of a cat landing sometime and watch how they do it. They sort of hit with their legs extended as far as possible, then let them collapse under their weight to gradually apply the force of the fall to the ground beneath them. (imagine the derivative of the speed of your fall, the deceleration) Use the distance you have between your feet touching and you practically laying on the floor on all fours to decelrate as smoothly as possible. I teied a few leaps off of a chair in my dorm room and decided that falling with your arms extended over your head helps. as you are "crumpling" to the ground to decelerate the fall, pull your arms down to negate a little of the energy. Once your arms are down then, use them to let yourself collapse further to the floor and extend the time you can decelerate smoothly.

The stereotypical ninja fall starts with hanging by the fingertips with toes extended and a straight fall, followed by the ninja dude silently decelerating his fall by crumpling smoothly into a ball on the floor. No, a ball, not a splat, so don't try any of this from too high.

Wow I wasted some space on that. Hope it helps. I wanna hear from jester on this subject.

Well, I have done a fair amount of falls/landings actually. I've wiped out on My Ninja ZX-6 doing about 60, had the bike flip and I had to launch off at the top of the flip, the bike clipped me in the knee as it flipped again (but at least i didn't end up under it). So I flew at high speed for about 20 feet, and came down legs first, bending alot to absorb the impact, then breakfalling over basically in a slightly sideways somersault and was back on my feet before the bike finished bouncing and flipping. I had to quickly step back a few feet as the bike was bouncing towards me... The only injury was some swelling in my knee, but that was from the bike hitting me, not from the actual landing.

I used that example, because it illustrates how the technique thats been described works. I had a lot of momentum but by using my legs as initial shock absorbers then rolling with the rest, it took me through it safely.

Same principle is used when you fall or jump. Practice small jumps to get used to absorbing the impact with your knee bends mostly. Practice breakfalls from standing, then from a bit higher, etc. When you're good at them, you'll be able to make pretty quiet landings, and most important , injury free landings...

I use the foot-rolling technique to walk. I don't know what else to call it. Recce and ETF forces use it because their boots are not flexible to walk silently in any other way. Basically you hit the ground slightly outside your heel and instead of coming straight down, you roll your foot on the outside edge, and push off with the toes. It's a lot quieter if you crouch a bit when you do it. If I have boots on I use this method, if I have running shoes I either use thise method or the toe-heel method.

Basically I'm good enough now that even blind people sometimes can't hear me coming. Just today I was walking to class down a relatively quiet section of campus and as I rounded a corner I almost stepped on the dog and I stopped, the dog stopped and the blind owner got confused as to why the dog stopped and had to give it a little tug to get it going again.

Some never participate. Life happens to them. They get by on little more than dumb persistence and resist with anger or violence all things that might lift them out of resentment-filled illusions of security.

You must do some kind of martial arts, cuz something similar (but not as hardcore) happened to me, and I practice judo... I was playing street hockey, and here was this person who stuck his hockey stick right in between my feet, which made me fall. The only thing I told myself was :dont fall on your hands, dissipate the energy. Which I did, I did one of those cool rolls on the asphalt, and got back up with a scratched finger, and a little shocked, but I came back playing 2 minutes later. Thats when my judo reflexes splurted out automatically. I didnt think of what I learned in judo, it simply came out by itself. Someone "normal" would have putten his hands in front f him and got the asphalt embedded in their hands, which hurts.

I indeed looked stylish this day!

It's important to have rythem and use natural sounds to your advantage. You can stay awat from creaky floors by walking near the walls I believe. Just little things like that.

Obviously my Judo skills have all left me, since I landed like this off my bike today... ouch. Of course it has been a few years since I did any of that, I should take it up again.

The rollouts did come in handy for practicing falling and dissipating force though.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

10+ years ago I took a lame volleyball class in college. Even though I have no martial arts background, they called me ninja. I dove to hit the ball, must've done some graceful summersault, and hopped back up on my feet. ...felt natural.

Well, I do have pretty decent reflexes. My dad started me in boxing at 5, then some tae kwon do at about 12, and kickboxing for about 14 years off and on...

I've been wanting to take up kickboxing...

Is it actual fighting at all, or just hitting that punching bag thing?

kickboxing generally has contact. sparring, with the headgear/gloves/footpads...
but thereare two distinct types of kickboxing. Eastern and western. Eastern is really called muay thai and is very physical. Main difference between them is that in eastern, you learn to do little extra things, like follow through on a punch withyour elbow... not for people with a low pain tolerance, lol
Both styles are effective martial arts though, and great for excercise/conditioning.
