Once the most popular place in the Catskills, there are many great images of faded elegance. This sprawling hotel is partially demolished, but has something for everyone whether you're interested in architecture, machinery, digging through piles of garbage, and even (maybe) tunnels.

Today many people flock to large distant attractions for vacations. In years past, New Yorkers would travel to the Catskills for the many resorts in the area. These upstate hotels featured amenities for recreation, swimming, air conditioning. Borscht Belt resorts came from a need for vacation spots for Jewish people that were not admitted to other resorts due to antisemitism. One such resort was the largest, one of the most popular, the Concord Resort Hotel, located in Kiamesha Lake, New York. In 1935 Arthur Winarick took ownership of the Ideal Plaza at the site, and opened a new hotel, the Concord Plaza with 500 rooms in 1937. Over the years Concord grew to the largest resort hotel in the country, boasting 1,225 rooms, two pools, two golf courses, 24 tennis courts, an indoor skating rink, ski slopes and a toboggan slide. The resort invested in the newest technology including a "snow-making machine". In the 50's, Winarick passed the resort down to his daughter Clara and her husband Ray Parker. Business was booming, the hotel was host to many notable guests and performers. Martin Luther King was honored with an award in 1963 five years before his assassination. The hotel hosted such performers as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Tom Jones, Dolly Parton, Sandra Bernhard, The Beach Boys, Air Supply, Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers, Dom Deluise, Paul Anka, Milton Berle, Judy Garland, Tony Martin, Willie Nelso, Bill Cosby, and Barbra Streisand, to name a few. Buddy Hackett also performed at the Concord, where he met his wife Sherry Dubois. Members of the Montreal Canadiens held professional hockey clinics in the summer of 1980. Also in 1980, the Concord was a filming location for the 1982 film, "Soup For One", starring Saul Rubinek. However, by the 1980's the upstate resort business was slowing down. Travel by automobile and air had become attractive and affordable to the average middle class family. Many homes had air conditioning and pools now, so it took more than a dated hotel with some sports amenities to attract the majority of vacationers. The Concord survived despite this, and even a tragedy. In 1984 a fire broke out in the basement of one of the buildings. The eleven story, 232 room tower was evacuated with one dead and a half dozen admitted to a nearby hospital. By 1985 Concord or other upstate resorts were no longer in the top ten American tourist attractions. They had long been surpassed by Disney World, Disney Land, the two Sea World resorts, Busch Gardens, even three Six Flags locations. Debt mounted over the next ten years, eventually leading to bankruptcy. The Concord closed in 1998 and in 1999 the Concord sold at auction for just over 10 million. In the early 2000's various attempts were made by new owners to demolish old structures and renew the resort. Mohegan Sun pursued a license to open a new $630 million dollar Mohegan Sun resort and casino. However by 2004 it was again sold at a loss, this time to Empire resorts, which owned a casino and raceway. The expansive resort sat in rotting ruins for years. The hotel resort was used by law enforcement and emergency response teams for disaster response training, making use of the large hotel and basements for rescue training. Recently, the NY Gaming commission awarded a casino license to Empire, for Montreign Casino and Resort to be built on the site of the Concord. The new resort will include an eighteen story casino, and a five-star hotel with nearly 400 rooms and suites. Today, the old Concord is demolished, but the new resort is under construction.
