| | | Posted by Therrin Do you even know what you're doing on rope? I can't recall. Have you done rappelling / ascending before? put some hose around the rope and shove a sweater under it and just go do it, if you know what you're doing. You should be able to tie off a rope to a truck bumper and throw a throwbag with a smaller line over the entire damn thing, then use it to pull a rope over. Tie that one off to another vehicle then ascend up one side or the other and use it to navigate across the top. Pad the rope where necessary when you get up there. If you do that you'll need to have someone untie the rope on the side that you're going to rappel down. It looks like you can get pretty high up on it already though. You could also do you ladder idea and man-up and scoot across the intersections up above. Hard to tell from the pics.
|
I learned rock wall climbing on an 45 feet indoor wall, so yes I know how to do rappelling, for ascending, I used to climb up there, but here it's not possible, so besides a introduction into ascending with only 3 feet of experience, I still have to learn this part. I can't get a vehicle near it at all. I have some structures as well as larger trees that have to do it, I know I will use more than one anchor point at the same time, so in case one gives in I have an extra one. I want to ascend up on the tall side, so I don't have to walk over the top. I just was worried that I will damage the rope on the edges, as you most of the time have a perfect anchor point in sports climbing.

I used to have all kinds of rock climber instructor certs and whatnot. Fact of the matter is that vertical access is NOT rock climbing. Different skill sets, and some different equipment. Different techniques. Different thought process. Certified by whom, might I ask? And if you wrote them a letter saying "does my certification on 'rock walls' cover man-made structures, and rope-ascending and other manner of things which are not the environment I was certified on?" I imagine you'll get an interesting answer. Not to cut too-close a comparison, but just cuz you're licensed to drive a car doesn't mean you automatically know how or are safe to drive a motorcycle or a big rig. They've all got engines in them and they all share the road, but they're DIFFERENT.

And my truck driving instructor said at the first time on a big rig that I am a great driver, without any experience on this large vehicle. Anyway, that's why I asked with the rope as I didn't use it before in such an angle. And I will try it at a tree or maybe above water before I go up there. Securing a rope is not different from securing other loads, I have four anchor points that each should be able to hold the weight, without a problem, but I will use all four anyway, I have the hardware for it. So I have dynamic rope and for this 30 feet it shouldn't be so bad, but if I would want to buy some static rope online, were would you recommend that I buy it. Here around I can only buy 150 feet and this is more than I need.

I've purchased several thousands of $$$ of gear from this site. They're good ppl.

| | | By the way I couldn't buy the in sale rope, for some reason it didn't allow me, but I got the insale webbing, so I might have some more stuff to tie the rope to a tree. I would have used chains, but this might be better as it won't pull the rope back up when I take the weight off.

I'm sure even in Romania that explosives are a controlled material and blowing shit up is REALLY illegal. Not to mention, to use primacord properly you also need the correct blasting caps, a detonator, enough detonator wire to reach a safe distance etc etc etc. There's a LOT that goes into blowing shit up without blowing yourself up, which is why professionals train for years to use that crap. The first year of bomb tech school is learning how not to kill yourself. If you are going to destroy the lock (don't) then just get a cordless drill and a 3/16" bit. It'll take only seconds, you won't kill yourself and won't go to prison of unlawfully using an explosive. I know you wanted to sound cool but keep it real instead, ya.

| | | BACK ON TOPIC-
I like to be prepared but not carry so much that I feel encumbered or too weighed down to move quickly. Unless I'm checking something out that I found just that minute and think I might not get another chance any time soon here's my list. A comfy, day bag sized backpack (don't remember who makes it, cut the logo tags off) with hydration pouch for my Camelbak bladder (100oz). A decent headlamp, small surefire, Photon on my keychain. Extra batteries for the first two, Leatherman Ti Charge, small FAK, camera, hat, climbing shoes, riggers belt, descender, 50' dynamic line, gloves, sling for aid placement when needed, ascenders, notebook, hat, munchies, phone, respirator if it looks like I need it asbestos is nothing to play with, my Rockstead, markers tape and some bug spray.

That presupposes that you are not in an RF rich environment and are going to use an electric cap. Everyone knows that detcord needs a cap to set it off. It's not fuse-cord, it's a sheathed core of PETN. It's one of the more inherently safe methods out there, and there are no recorded instances of accidental detonation due to shock or impact, and it can't be 'ignited' by flame. The guy could wrap a coil of it around his neck and walk around with it or go ride a rollercoaster or juggle burning torches and he'd be completely fine unless he managed to detonate it with a cap... But since the cap needs to be in DIRECT contact with the detcord, and at least 6" from the end, pointed in the direction of cord travel; Anything that'd detonate the cord would likely rip his fucking head off on it's own anyway.

| | | Thanks for the lesson on basics. My point being is that NO one should try blowing anything up, period. If anyone on here knew how to do that professionally from their job ie. bomb tech, military explosives specialist or demolition worker then they wouldn't be asking about it. Its like buying something expensive, if you have to ask how much it costs (in this case, how to do something) then you sure can't afford it (and sure shouldn't be trying it). I know it sounds cool to bring up that you saw some flickr photos of a breaching team using IV bags and primacord for dynamic entry but that shit doesn't belong here.
