Pictures are important but so is having a short, snappy and funny profile. Don't do typical bathroom mirror shots like some thirsty model wannabe, use pics of yourself being active - if you have any. If you don't, get some - and not just exploring pictures either unless you enjoy having to explain that to everyone. Use pics of you with your friends and doing other hobbies. Sending cut and paste messages to 500 women is wasting your time. You should at least have an idea of what you are looking for. When you find someone who meets some of your critera, send a short, funny PERSONALIZED message referencing something you saw on their profile - something in her pictures, or in what she wrote - even just making a smartass comment can get a response. Cut and paste, repetitive messages are an insult. Qualify, and you won't waste your time having these horror stories. Spend time looking at the profiles of other men in your area, and it will be blindingly obvious what works and what does not. Don't be a time waster - if you have the smallest vibe from messaging, get the phone number and set up a meet.

and don't tell me I'm lying because it's so rare - I passed over many a pretty picture because the profile made him sound like a vapid idiot and paused on many a profile that the everyday barbie would scoff at because I value people (even the ones I've never met yet) for their minds and views and abilities, not a six pack or a beach body.

I was set to take a stance similar to what Yield posted before me, but that said, I think the intention of the one seeking is the determining factor as to how much value is placed on a picture, and how much is placed on anything else.

If the person seeking out another is just looking for something casual, just to have fun, to get laid by some hot piece of ass, or wants to be seen with some attractive person for whatever reason, then nothing the other person says or types is terribly relevant so long as the picture meets their desired expectations. It should matter, just in case they're trying to tell you they have herpes or have a minimum fee, but whatever. These folks are relatively disposable in that context, sadly enough.

If the person seeking out another is looking for something beyond that physical connection, then what is said or written becomes exponentially more important. In some cases, this supersedes what's in a photograph, and in some cases not. A friend of mine had an interesting take on this in his online search for a girlfriend... "She doesn't have to be pretty, but she just has to be pretty enough."

As the saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." And as explorers who regularly find beauty in what most would find a blight, is it really such a stretch to think this "phenomenon" could occur in the realm of dating too?

This is true. I'm just bored to death of my incestuous social group (that also rules out my "church") and my school isn't any better. I guess it was just wishful thinking.

That's not entirely the case. The woman I used to go deer hunting with, I met through POF.

It was cool because if we didn't have any luck hunting, we had other options to pursue.
