SouthEast PA - PH Security Stepped up big time

I was in PH in Southeast PA over the weekend, my 9th trip in, thought I was fine, until I got down in the tunnel below the Union Building, and whammo PA State Trooper points his gun straight at me, tells me to drop on the floor, I almost turned and ran, but I didnt know if there were any other cops around, and I didnt want an evading arrest charge. Turns out he didnt arrest me, but handcuffed me, checked my bag for any bad stuff ( only had light sticks, flashlight, crackers, water, and my camera), took me up stairs, another trooper joined him, and walked me down the main path to the White Van with the VA Security Guard in it. uncuffed me, gave me the lecture on how dangerous the place is, bums, unstable floor, etc, etc, etc. I played dumb and scared, and got a free ride back into town.

Be careful if you are exploring there, honestly it scared the shat out of me, because I didnt see his badge just heard him ordering me to the floor and saw the gun in his hand, plus it was probably the darkest part of the tunnel system there.

PH isnt worth getting an arrest on your record, so be careful and play dumb.

Yeah I should have known better than to go there in October, just was bored and had nothing better to do.I guess since the state troopers are at PH, i should go out and do wheelies on 422 with my street bike, and sell meth in Spring City, odds are I wont get caught

he was right by the tunnel entrance in union, I was coming from tinicum across via the tunnel.

Good thing you didnt get busted, maybe its only on certain days. All I know is that ive been there a bunch of times, and this is the first time that ive run into heat. Ive always stood on the roof and watched security in the white van drive aimlessly around campus. who knew.

wow. the only time i went there a few years ago, we ducked into the tunnel - under that ramp-y think - to hide from the VA security.

the only trespassing offense i have was not there, but near by where the NS tracks cross the river into a tunnel. I got thrown on the hood of the car and cuffed - for being the most cooperative and polite of the 3 of us. weird!

straight up, no bullshit - rofl

and you didn;t see his badge? wow. they just wanted to see if you had some moneys in yo' wallet and any drinkable/smokable goods they were hoping to find so they could leave you handcuffed, stranded, in the tunnels of PH.

state cop, in the tunnels by union? Just chillen' waiting for trespassers? nah, sorry. You got had. And, if that is the case - I find it hilarious.

Oh! And the major flaw in your story is saying that the cop came at you guns drawn... I'd bet, a lot, that it was a squirt gun.

I've had park rangers come at me with guns drawn before, but only after they thought I B&E'd. and burglarized. neither of which did I do, but I had a hell of a time talking myself out of that one.

I promise, if someone ever tried some shit like that with me... wooooo

I've gotta agree, and i don't mean to come off as a skeptic or jerk, but i find this kinda hard to believe. I do know of one person who was arrested under Devon hall in the recent months, but this was on a night when there was a SERIOUS police presence all over the property. If what you are saying is true, then thanks for the warning man, it's always good to have inside information.

Until you realize he actually is a State Trooper...

And I know cops who draw their guns all the time. Some really are not hesitant at all.

But the fact he was in the tunnel is strange, usually police dont like to chase people once they get inside a structure, let alone sit and wait there with all that shit in the air. Im thinking the trooper was having a look around than ran into you. Could be a reason he let you off, maybe he understood the fascination.

PS: You wouldnt happen to know if the Trooper's first name was Art, would you?

Fire & Rescue will train one weekend a month in the old buildings.

I have heard that they stepped up police presence & explorers have been chased by police. I do know the State police will patrol the grounds at times.

I have never had a problem on the grounds & once was stopped by security & they said it was owned by the State & we weren't allowed on the property. I explained I was taking pictures of the exteriors of the buildings ...He asked us to leave the property. Once he was out of sight, we jumped in a building & didn't see anyone from the rest of the day.

There must be quite a few things a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know any of them.

Saturday morning, approximately 9:30-9:45am, well hate all you want, I didnt post this up as an OMG I got busted by the state police, i posted it up as a heads up , state cops are on the property.
Exact location, The Tunnel Under Union right near the stairwell of the exit out to the main sidewalk.

I mean I can only find a justification for handcuffing me to emphasize his point that I shouldnt be on the property. It has been the first time that I have seen a state trooper on the property, usually its just the white van patrolling around the upper campus, and occasionally down by the powerhouse.

Not going to stop me from going back, ill just wait til all the haloween nonsense dies down, and activity goes back to normal.

Heckle away all you want, everyone is a big boy on the net. it was just meant as a fyi.

i can believe it.

this place is like the local training ground
and bored cop's hangout. they probably joke
about it.

"yo dave, wanna go scare up some teens at
the old school grounds?"

"nah, maybe tomorrow. i need to catch three
more speeders by friday."

it's way too easy for them to catch you since
these buildings aren't boarded up.
i like pennhurst but it's too much of a
crapshoot to go there on a regular basis.

I still say you've been had. Sorry. not trying to be a tough guy

I've been there countless times, and the only time I've ever ran into a cop it was a SC PD cop near the power plant. He just told us to leave.

As for the cops coming at you with guns drawn, trust me - I know. I've been convicted (but never indicted) of two felony charges after being caught leaving a high-risk location by some cowboy DNREC cops. 6 of them, all guns drawn. Shit, I've had Wilmington, Philly, and New Castle County cops all come at me with guns drawn in the past.

-----

All that said, that place does get weird with activity in the month of October. I just find it very, very strange that you'd run into a State Cop back there in the tunnels. And he never showed you a badge. You were detained, did he read you your rights?

Now it is just sounding like you ran into a search and rescue guy back there. Sometimes they are nice, sometimes not so. They do train one weekend out of the month as Paisley said. Me thinks you ran into one of them, which is why you were escorted to the White Van, and not a squad car.

but you know better than I.

Regarding the badge, No you misread what I typed, or I did not type clearly what I was meaning to say.. I couldnt see his badge when i saw the gun (obviously, due to the location where I was at.), thats what scared the shat out of me. when he came closer after i hit the deck, he had the a brown uniform shirt with the badge and logos on.

Sorry for not clearing that up earlier.

Also for note, the VA Security guard mentioned something about people stealing copper from the building? Dunno why someone would go after copper in that building with all the asbestos in there.
