I'm an LCC Lutheran. One of the other ministers in the area smiled at my sister when she mentioned my church and said to her 'Oh, you're from the dark ages Church'

We may perhaps be a little old fashioned but I like it.

It's a tragedy.
It's exactly like a greek tragedy.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. AKA, a Mormon. The first to say so in this thread as well (I think).

How does one go about getting "de-baptised"? Never heard of such a thing.

He didn't say he got boinked *by* a priest. Big difference there.

First I love this "I am a _____" thing. Despite the large array of differences their entire selves are reduced to a single label.

Well I suppose for the sake of continuing discussion I will provide myself some labels. I am a type-physicalist, quasi existentialist, Derridian, atheist. It's okay I sometimes get confused about how they work together also. Oh yeah and I should mention Foucauldian also. I just mentioned two European philosophers so I should probably mention that I am not a Marxist or neo-marxist. Though sometimes I can be found reading manifestos in the corner and giving management an evil eye.

Calling Atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color.

Being atheist is a form of religion..

Religion is a system of social coherence based on a common group of beliefs or attitudes concerning an object, person, unseen being, or system of thought considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine or highest truth, and the moral codes, practices, values, institutions, traditions, and rituals associated with such belief or system of thought. It is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system", but is more socially defined than that of personal convictions.

Belief is usually defined as a conviction of the truth of a proposition without its verification; therefore a belief is a subjective mental interpretation derived from perceptions, contemplation(reasoning), or communication.

In the religious sense, "belief" refers to a part of a wider spiritual or moral foundation — generally called faith. Historically, faiths were generated by groups seeking a functionally valid foundation to sustain them.

Theism is the belief in the existence of one or more Gods or deities.

Atheism is the state of disbelief or non-belief in the existence of a deity or deities. It is commonly defined as the positive denial of theism (ie. the assertion that deities do not exist), or the deliberate rejection of theism (i.e., the refusal to believe in the existence of deities). However, others—including most atheistic philosophers and groups—define atheism as the simple absence of belief in deities, thereby designating many agnostics, and people who have never heard of gods, such as the unchurched or newborn children, as atheists as well. In recent years, some atheists have adopted the terms strong and weak atheism to clarify whether they consider their stance one of positive belief that no gods exist (strong atheism), or of mere absence of belief that gods exist (weak atheism).

Many self-described atheists share common skeptical concerns regarding empirical evidence for supernatural claims. They cite a lack of evidence for the existence of deities. Other rationales for atheism range from the personal to the philosophical to the social to the historical. Additionally, while atheists tend to accept secular philosophies such as humanism, naturalism and materialism, they do not necessarily adhere to any one particular ideology, nor does atheism have any institutionalized rituals or behaviors.

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics.
