So use the same logic to explain why the european versions aren't sold over here then hot shot?

remember the grand Merkur experiment that Ford tried in the mid-1980's? They introduced a fairly well selling hatchback from Europe to the United States. It was known as the Ford Sierra. Very good selling car. Well, Ford decided to hot the car up a bit using the drivetrain out of the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, change some of the cosmetics of the car, and sell it at Lincoln-Mercury dealers as a Merkur. The car was fast, faster than the literature let on. It was supposed to replace the Mustang clone Capri and add some class to the L-M lineup.
The XR4Ti and the Scorpio flopped miserably. Despite the fact that they were both excellent cars, they flopped. They sold for 4 years (1985-1989) and Ford lost their shirt on the cars.
Flash forward again, Ford tries to engineer a world car for both Europe and North America. Again, based it in a European success story, the Ford Mondeo. Here in North America, it was known as the Contour/Mystique... and they were garbage.
Let's move to GM since you all hate GM so much... GM needed a compact car so they turned to their European divisions and brought the Vauxhall Cadet here as the Chevette. It was nothing to get excited over, but with it's small displacement 4 cylinder and available Isuzu-sourced Diesel, it got excellent economy. GM sold every one of them despite them being a piece of flaming shit.
So what am I getting at?
Sometimes, cars don't translate well to other continents. Look at Toyotas and Volkswagens, since we have lovers of both makes here... the VW's and Yotas that are sold in our foreign markets are far different than the cars that are sold here. Again, translation.
Here's a bitter pill... did you know that the Chevrolet Cavalier was sold in Japan as a Toyota?
Hmmm... how bizarre.
