Then why do they use them for boat tours? We saw them in Pittsburgh a couple years ago, doing city tours cruising down the rivers. It seems like if that was an issue, there'd be too much liability involved in taking passengers. Unless they had inflatable floats on them in case of problems.
| A lot of the vehicles used for those tours are just facsimiles of a DUKW, the original machines have for the most part been long retired. Or converted for modern maritime safety requirements. There are a few companies that actually build them new for the tour industry, Chicago DUKWs will build new or restore to specification. They have modern power plants, seals, pumps, and drivetrains that are better suited to the marine environment and passenger service. The originals were designed for one purpose and that was to get supplies from a ship onto a coast line. Mortality rates for any combat vehicle are usually expected to be fairly high and these were no different. This usually means that safety features are eliminated or toned down as losses are expected. There are many of these sunk in the pacific and off the coast of France. Many of them due to high seas and not gun fire. There have been several accidents too, The last one I remember was in Wisconsin Dells. The DUKW sprung a leak and there was either issues with the bilge pumps or they were never turned on. It went straight to the bottom killing some passengers. Unfortunately a jack of all trades is master at none. These arent really a good truck and arent really a decent boat either haha. Ours is seaworthy and has been in the water lately. Its definitely a blast but good lord is the work to keep it nautical a pain in the ass.

| | | Oldmansmobile? Well, I'm happy so far, bought this morning, ('96 Cutlass 3.1 400.00) needed a good cleaning. Couple of clear coat flaws, gray trans fluid, no AC. Has near new Michelins, good interior and body, feels unexpectedly tight. 252,000 kilometers. Was looking at Golfs, Jettas, Acura Legend (with a knock and no headroom), Taurus wagons, Minivans. Only junk under 1000.00 here. Always liked mid size, and this series GM. Better than second gen Taurus, and of course the Chrysler Intrepid etc. Drove a ratty old '90 Lumina Eurosport the other day; lots of power for the 3.1, heavy steering, but still running strong. Underated cars? Mod: No offense to the Intepid! What ever floats your watercraft. Comfortable cars, but I've heard are not reliable.

| beware the 3100. NOTORIOUS for head gasket and intake gasket set failures. Other than that, as a W-body, fairly bulletproof. I had a 98 Lumina and a 99 Monte Carlo, structurally the same car as your Cutty. and does your engine look like this? :P
